Stress of the 10th grade entrance exam

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên05/06/2023

Nearly 96,000 candidates participated in the 10th grade entrance exam at 158 testing locations (147 regular testing locations and 11 specialized testing locations), with 4,102 examination rooms. Of these, 88,237 candidates registered for regular 10th grade classes and approximately 8,000 candidates took the exam for specialized and integrated 10th grade classes.

According to the leaders of the Department of Education and Training, this year's 10th grade exam continues to follow the orientation of developing critical thinking skills and avoids rote learning. The content and requirements of the exam are closely related to real-world situations, suitable for the psychology of students of this age group, and evoke many emotions in candidates when taking the exam.

Assign teachers to assist students in writing exam papers.

Mr. Ho Tan Minh, Chief of the Office of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, said yesterday, June 5th, that after candidates arrived at the examination centers to complete the registration procedures and declare their personal information, nine candidates needed assistance. The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training then implemented a plan to arrange for teachers to write the exam papers for these candidates. These included cases of candidates at examination centers in Thu Duc District, Districts 3, 10, 12, Go Vap, Hoc Mon District, Binh Chanh District, etc., who had accidents, and hearing-impaired candidates needing assistance during the exam.

Candidates taking the 10th grade entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City completed registration procedures and listened to the regulations being explained on June 5th.

Specifically, eight candidates have experienced accidents in recent days, such as injuries to their right hand, surgery to repair tendons and muscles in their forearm, and wrist fractures, requiring invigilators to write their exam papers for them. One hearing-impaired candidate also needed assistance bringing their hearing aid into the examination room.

Mr. Ho Tan Minh informed that the Department of Education and Training arranged for invigilators to assist in writing the exam papers for the aforementioned candidates. These invigilators are high school teachers, not specialists in teaching the subjects being tested.

The 10th grade entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City will take place over two days, June 6th and 7th, with subjects including Vietnamese Literature, Foreign Language, Mathematics (if applying for regular 10th grade classes) and specialized/integrated subjects (if applying for specialized/integrated 10th grade classes).

The admission ratios for many specialized high schools are intensely competitive.

Meanwhile, students in many localities have completed their 10th-grade entrance exams and are anxiously awaiting the announcement of their exam results and cut-off scores.

From June 2nd to 5th, many localities in the northern region held the entrance exam for 10th grade high school for the 2023-2024 school year, including Hung Yen, Bac Giang, Lao Cai, Hai Phong, Bac Ninh , Phu Tho, Nghe An, etc. In general, most provinces and cities moved the 10th grade entrance exam this year forward by at least about a week compared to last year.

In addition, candidates taking the entrance exam for 10th grade at specialized high schools affiliated with universities have completed their exams, such as the Specialized High School for Natural Sciences , the Specialized High School for Foreign Languages, and the Specialized High School for Social Sciences and Humanities; candidates taking the entrance exam for the 10th grade at the Specialized High School affiliated with the University of Education have also finished their 10th grade exams.

This year, the competition ratio for these schools remains fierce, with some specialized subjects requiring a single candidate to compete against dozens of others for a place.

Some localities have adjusted their admission plans to reduce pressure on candidates. A prime example is Nghe An province, the first in the country to allow students to change their preferences after completing the exam. After taking the exam, based on their self-assessment of their performance, students can change their preferences to maximize their chances of admission. Meanwhile, in recent years, Hanoi has abolished the regulation allowing students to change their registered preferences after knowing the competition ratio for each school. This forces students and parents to carefully consider their choices, and many students regret choosing schools with low admission scores despite having high exam scores.

The Bac Ninh Department of Education and Training announced that this year's exam has several new features to better suit the current situation and meet the needs of students. One of these new features is that each candidate can register for two preferences at two high schools within the same district. However, candidates applying to Bac Ninh Specialized High School can register for three preferences: one for Bac Ninh Specialized High School and two for the two high schools within the same district. Based on the candidates' exam scores, the Department of Education and Training will consider admitting 95% of the students from their first preference according to the allocated quota.

Regarding the complaints about students being forced not to take the 10th grade entrance exam, following Hanoi, the Vinh Phuc Department of Education and Training has also issued a document requesting district education departments to take measures to address and handle educational institutions that obstruct, create difficulties for, or force students not to register for the 10th grade entrance exam according to their preferences.

Although the level of competition varies, in many localities, the entrance exam for 10th grade is considered the most stressful exam, especially in areas where the number of public high schools does not meet the demand.
