Manchester United are seriously considering handing over the first-team reins to Michael Carrick until the end of the season.

Following the decision to sack Ruben Amorim, Manchester United entered a sensitive transition period on the coaching bench. The 1-1 draw against Leeds last weekend marked the end of Amorim's short reign at Old Trafford, forcing the club to activate its pre-prepared contingency plans.

For now, Darren Fletcher has been appointed as interim manager. However, according to sources in England, the Manchester United board does not see this as a long-term solution. Instead, Director of Football Jason Wilcox is pushing for the appointment of Michael Carrick for the remainder of the season, as a more stable and less risky option.

Carrick is currently a free agent after leaving Middlesbrough at the end of last season. Although he didn't make significant progress in his last two seasons, the 44-year-old manager is still highly regarded for his impact in the 2022/23 season, when he helped Middlesbrough finish fourth in the Championship and reach the semi-finals of the promotion play-offs.

More importantly, Carrick is seen as a pragmatic coach who focuses on structure and control of the game, something MU is lacking during this period of crisis.

At Old Trafford, Carrick has a significant advantage in terms of internal knowledge. He spent 12 years with MU as a player, was a key figure in the dressing room, before returning as an assistant to Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

In 2021, Carrick served as interim manager and remained unbeaten in three matches before leaving the club when Ralf Rangnick was appointed.

West Ham United's interest in Carrick has made it even harder for Manchester United to act quickly if they want to maintain control. Meanwhile, Rio Ferdinand has urged the club to pursue big names like De Zerbi, Tuchel, or Xavi, but for MU right now, Carrick is seen as a safe bet: he understands the club well enough, has enough experience to handle the transition period, and possesses the "MU spirit" to maintain stability in the dressing room until the end of the season.
