Photos uploaded to Facebook suddenly went black.

On Saturday morning, many people were surprised when color photos uploaded to Facebook were converted to black and white. Meta, Facebook's parent company, has yet to provide an explanation.

Users upload regular photos, but Facebook displays them in black and white, which is confusing.

The phenomenon began to be observed from the evening of April 18th to the midday of April 19th, affecting both personal posts and comments with photos. Many users reported that photos on their devices were still in color, but when uploaded to Facebook, they were converted to black and white.

"Clearly, I uploaded color photos, but Facebook automatically converted them to black and white," shared tech expert Tran Xuan Vinh on his page. Previously, he had uploaded photos from a tech event, all of which were in black and white. Some commenters even joked about adding color to these images.

The confusing part is that the error doesn't occur uniformly. In the same post with multiple photos, some photos are affected while others are not. This leaves users unable to determine whether it's a device error or a Facebook app error.

This phenomenon isn't limited to Vietnamese users; it's also being reported in many Facebook user groups worldwide . "What's wrong with my Facebook? All my uploaded photos are black and white. Is anyone else experiencing this?" shared user Rainbow Chicken Farm, receiving numerous responses from users with similar experiences.

The exact cause remains unclear. Neither Meta, Facebook's parent company, nor the platform itself have issued any statements. Downdetector, a platform for reporting bugs in popular apps, has also not recorded any large-scale outages, although there have been scattered reports of slow loading times or incomplete displays over the past 24 hours.

Typically, photos uploaded to Facebook go through several steps of compression, format conversion, and the creation of different versions for each device. There may have been a problem in one or more of these steps.

It's unclear whether fixing this bug will restore the color images uploaded by users. For immediate display, users can try re-uploading their images to their posts.
