Is Carrick still not good enough?

Roy Keane admitted Manchester United are playing well with a full squad, but the former captain still insisted Michael Carrick is not a long-term option for the manager's job.

In a commentary on Sky Sports, Roy Keane offered a candid perspective on Manchester United's transformation. According to the former Red Devils captain, the team has undergone a significant metamorphosis recently, with many key players returning and the squad reaching its peak form.

"They're playing so well," Keane said, acknowledging the positive signs in terms of form and morale.

Particularly impressed by Matheus Cunha's goal against Arsenal on the morning of January 26th, the former Manchester United legend couldn't hide his admiration and said he would watch the video of the goal over and over again all night.

However, Keane quickly drew a clear line between short-term improvement and long-term goals. He argued that even if Manchester United finished in the top four of the Premier League, that wouldn't be enough to convince anyone that Michael Carrick was the right man for the manager position.

"They need a bigger and better coach," Keane emphasized.

Keane's argument reflects the very high expectations placed on MU, where the standard is not just returning to the Champions League, but also the ability to compete for major titles. For him, improved performance when the squad is full is understandable, but the core issue lies in the stature and experience of the manager.

Keane believes Manchester United needs a manager who has been proven at the highest level, possesses the composure to handle pressure, and can build a lasting identity.

This view immediately sparked intense controversy. Some fans saw in Carrick a deep understanding of the club's culture, the ability to connect with the dressing room, and the adjustments that helped the team stabilize quickly.

Keane's statement therefore presents Manchester United with a big question: Should they place their faith in internal continuity to maintain their recovery momentum, or seek a "big name" manager to raise their ambitions?

In the early hours of January 26th, MU defeated Arsenal 3-2 at the Emirates Stadium. This result propelled MU into the top 4 with 38 points after 23 rounds of matches.
