Tấn Phát shared: “Every day I find joy in learning, because besides my teachers at school, I always have the support of my parents, who not only help me with my studies and life skills, but also guide me to participate in competitions so that I can fulfill my passion for learning.”
The self-learning journey
Thanks to his diligent studies and passion for conquering English and Math competitions, Phat has now won a series of awards in Mathematics, such as: Gold medal at the Singapore and Asian Mathematical Olympiad (SASMO), gold medal in Mathematics at the Singapore Mathematical Olympiad (SMC0), silver medal at the American Mathematical Olympiad (AMO), silver medal at the Singapore Global Mathematical Olympiad (SMGF), bronze medal at the International Junior Mathematical Olympiad (IJMO), bronze medal at the Vietnam Junior Science Olympiad (VIJSO)...
Phát said that his greatest passion is exploring mathematics in his own way, and it's even more exciting because, in addition to his teachers at school, he has the support of his mother, who plays a crucial role in connecting him with international mathematics competitions. To acquire the basic and advanced knowledge needed to participate in international mathematics competitions, besides attending two classes at school, he spends 1-2 hours each day at home studying and playing his favorite sports . He considers learning and grasping the knowledge in class to be very important, and at home, he does many exercises to further solidify his understanding.
Sharing his own experience, Tan Phat believes that self-study plays a very important role, because in addition to basic knowledge, he also independently seeks out and discovers new and advanced knowledge for himself. "In the math competitions I've participated in, there was very new knowledge that wasn't taught at school, so to participate in these competitions and win prizes, I had to proactively study beforehand by asking my teachers or asking my mother at home," Phat confided.
Phát also believes that reading books and learning on social media are very interesting ways to gain more fascinating, useful, and diverse knowledge, while also developing many important skills.
When I have time, I often visit websites about mathematics to learn more, or go to YouTube channels specializing in mathematics and natural sciences to watch solutions to difficult math problems and perform experiments related to physics and mathematics.
What's special is that in all the math exams Phát has participated in, besides mathematical knowledge, candidates have been required to use English to complete the tests. Therefore, this process has demanded that he strive even harder to study and practice more skills.
Phát shared: “My parents introduced me to English from a young age, and I was fortunate enough to be in a bilingual environment in first grade, with many opportunities to learn and communicate in English with native English-speaking teachers following the Cambridge International English program. I had an even greater advantage when I was admitted to the CIE class, which is for students who excel in English and primarily use English in their studies of science and social studies.”
Tran Tan Phat, a student at Asia Bilingual Primary, Secondary, and High School:
Don't be afraid to make mistakes, don't shy away from difficulties.
"Every day I strive to explore my own potential and limits to become a better, more complete person than I was yesterday. I set specific goals for myself without fear of making mistakes or facing difficulties; the most important thing is that I am truly serious about achieving the goals I have set for myself."
My dream is to become a technology engineer.
Thanks to the good guidance from his parents and teachers, Tan Phat not only achieved good academic results but also had very clear goals for the future. Despite his young age, Phat's thoughts and dreams are anything but small. "I am passionate about studying Math and natural sciences like Physics, Chemistry, and English, so in the future I will strive to become an engineer in the technology field to serve my country," Phat said.
Phát's mother, Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan Dai, said that she graduated with a degree in chemical technology from the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City) and is currently working for a Japanese company in Vietnam. Besides her work, she is very focused on supporting her son's studies, character development, and essential life skills. While she cares about her son's education, she doesn't put pressure on him, but rather focuses on fostering his passion for learning and exploration, and she is always there to support him throughout his journey.
Ms. Xuan Dai shared: "Whenever I have time, or when my child needs help, I'm always ready to accompany her with her homework, share good books with her, and interesting programs on television. I also proactively research international mathematics competitions for her to participate in to challenge herself without putting too much emphasis on achievement."
Some teachers who taught Tran Tan Phat at the Asian Bilingual Primary, Secondary, and High School said that Phat is a student with good academic potential, confident, and dynamic. He can confidently use his English skills in various subjects and constantly explores his own limits during his studies. The Vice Principal of the Asian Bilingual Primary, Secondary, and High School, Ma Van Khanh, commented: “Tran Tan Phat is a diligent student with confident English communication skills, even though he has only completed the 6th grade.”
