Kota Takai has yet to make his Spurs debut due to injury. |
Takai will wear the Borussia Monchengladbach shirt until the end of the 2025/26 season. The 21-year-old defender joined Spurs from Kawasaki Frontale last summer, but his time in England has been severely interrupted by a series of injuries. This has prevented the Japanese international from making his debut for Tottenham.
Last weekend, Takai was included in the matchday squad for the first time when Spurs beat Crystal Palace 1-0, but he was only on the bench. He didn't feature in the 0-0 draw against Brentford, with a loan move to the Bundesliga looming.
Speaking after the deal was finalized, Monchengladbach's Sporting Director, Rouven Schroder, commented: "Kota is a tall, strong center-back with good speed. He has the qualities to help the team immediately. We are delighted to welcome our new number 14."
Takai has made 81 appearances for Kawasaki Frontale, and his consistent performance has earned him a call-up to the Japanese national team, with four caps since 2024. The 1.93m tall center-back still has a contract with Tottenham until summer 2030.
Takai is the second Spurs player to move to the Bundesliga on loan this season, after Luka Vuskovic. The 18-year-old talent is currently playing for Hamburg and has made a strong impression.
