Liang Wenfeng, the founder of DeepSeek, is considered a "highly disciplined" individual who doesn't take shortcuts in AI development. This was shared by Li Xiang, CEO and Chairman of the electric vehicle company Li Auto.

In a video posted by the company on social media last week, Mr. Li recounted his first meeting with Mr. Liang in September 2024. In it, the two leaders shared DeepSeek's "best practices" and the importance of finding shortcuts in technological development.

"Whenever we want to change and improve our capabilities, the first step is research. Then comes development, communicating those capabilities, and finally, transforming them into business value," Mr. Li shared.

Chairman Li Auto also praised DeepSeek's pursuit of an open-source strategy in AI development, a factor that helps guide its expansion strategy in the fields of artificial intelligence and humanoid robotics.

DeepSeek made a splash in late 2024 with its open-source AI models V3 and R1. These products were built with significantly lower costs and resources compared to large language models (LLMs) from leading technology companies.

The open-source strategy, which allows third parties to access, modify, and develop products, has played a crucial role in the development of China's technology industry for decades. Following a meeting with Mr. Liang, Li Auto decided to adopt DeepSeek's models to accelerate the development of its integrated AI system.

"We did this purely out of gratitude to DeepSeek," Mr. Li said.

Last year, the "father" of DeepSeek predicted that other AI companies would surpass OpenAI, even though the American company still maintains a closed-source model. At the China Digital Summit in April, expert Wu Zhiqiang stated that at least 18 research groups in China have a level of expertise comparable to DeepSeek.

Despite being one of the most influential figures in technology, Liang rarely appears in the media. The only indication of his role at DeepSeek is his name appearing in the company's research papers.
