Mr. Liang Wenfeng, founder of DeepSeek, is considered a "very disciplined" person and does not take shortcuts in the process of developing AI. This was shared by Mr. Li Xiang, CEO and Chairman of electric car company Li Auto.

In a video posted by the company on social media last week, Mr. Li recounted his first meeting with Mr. Liang in September 2024. In it, the two leaders shared DeepSeek’s “best practices” and the importance of finding shortcuts in technology development.

“Whenever we want to change and improve our capabilities, the first step is research. Then comes development, demonstration of capabilities, and finally turning it into business value,” Mr. Li shared.

Chairman Li Auto also appreciated DeepSeek's pursuit of an open-source strategy in AI development, which helps guide its expansion strategy in the fields of artificial intelligence and humanoid robotics.

DeepSeek made a splash in late 2024 with its open-source AI models V3 and R1. These products were built at a much lower cost and resource than the large language models (LLMs) of leading technology corporations.

The open-source strategy, which allows third parties to access, modify, and develop products, has played a key role in the development of China's tech industry for decades. After meeting with Mr. Liang, Li Auto decided to adopt DeepSeek's models to accelerate the development of its integrated AI system.

“We do it purely out of gratitude to DeepSeek,” said Mr. Li.

Last year, DeepSeek’s “father” predicted that other AI companies would surpass OpenAI, despite the US company’s closed-source model. At the Digital China Summit in April, expert Wu Zhiqiang said that there were at least 18 research teams in China that were at the same level as DeepSeek.

Despite his status as one of the most influential figures in technology, Liang rarely makes public appearances. The only indication of his role in DeepSeek is that his name appears in the company’s research papers.
