In 2025, Workers' Month will become even more special, as it marks the first year that employers, relevant agencies, especially trade unions and workers nationwide, implement the 2024 Trade Union Law and the 2024 Social Insurance Law. These two important laws directly affect the rights and interests of union members, workers, and trade unions; they provide a crucial legal framework for trade unions at all levels to better perform their functions and duties in representing and protecting the legitimate rights and interests of union members and workers, and demand greater responsibility from relevant agencies to ensure that the rights and obligations of workers always go hand in hand.
With the theme "The Vietnamese working class pioneers into a new era," and with the legal framework recently approved by the National Assembly at the end of 2024, the 2025 Workers' Month is expected to create new momentum. This year's Workers' Month launch ceremony was enthusiastically organized by trade unions at all levels in the province from mid-April with many activities. Along with the general goals and tasks outlined in the plan, each trade union has set specific tasks tailored to the local context, unit, and enterprise, promising to better protect and care for the rights of workers.
However, as in previous years, what many workers are concerned about is that after Workers' Month, many businesses face "silent periods" such as unsafe working environments; lack of cultural and recreational activities outside of working hours; employers failing to pay mandatory insurance for employees... Especially, some business owners demand overtime, putting pressure on workers to work more, but the benefits are not commensurate...
Therefore, organizing only one Workers' Month per year may not be enough for workers to fully and sustainably enjoy the benefits of union membership. Activities to protect and care for workers need to be organized more regularly by trade unions in coordination with business owners. In particular, trade unions must strengthen their monitoring of the protection of workers' legitimate rights and interests in enterprises to limit strikes and collective work stoppages, which have been on the rise in the province recently.
Furthermore, the 2024 Trade Union Law and the 2024 Social Insurance Law have more specifically stipulated the powers and responsibilities of trade union representatives, caretakers, and those protecting the legitimate rights and interests of trade union members and workers, such as investing in the construction of social housing, cultural and sports facilities, and related technical infrastructure serving trade union members and workers. In addition, they organize activities to care for and improve the living standards, culture, and spirit of workers, as well as expanding the scope of those eligible to participate in compulsory and voluntary social insurance... These tasks need to be seriously implemented and supervised by all levels of trade unions and relevant agencies. The 2025 Workers' Month is the time for trade unions at all levels to organize activities to care for workers, including urging business owners to strictly implement this issue, so that the 2024 Trade Union Law and the 2024 Social Insurance Law can gradually be put into practice after they come into effect next July.
