Despite their best efforts, Iraq could not withstand the attacking power of Norway in the match on the morning of June 17th. Striker Ayman Hussein scored the only goal for the Asian representatives in the recent encounter.
Before Iraq took to the field, Asia had already made a remarkable mark at the biggest football event on the planet. Six representatives from the region avoided defeat in their opening matches, a feat unprecedented in the history of the World Cup.
South Korea opened with a comeback 2-1 victory over the Czech Republic, while Australia also delivered a convincing performance, defeating Türkiye 2-0. Besides these two wins, four other Asian representatives also achieved positive results against highly-rated opponents.
Qatar drew 1-1 with Switzerland, Japan shared points with the Netherlands in a dramatic 2-2 draw. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia forced Uruguay to share points 1-1, and Iran produced an exciting chase to draw 2-2 with New Zealand.
After Iraq, Asia has two more representatives preparing to compete: Uzbekistan (against Colombia) and Jordan (against Austria). These are both tough challenges for the two teams making their first appearance at the biggest football event on the planet.
