After four years in exile within the opposition, former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis has once again led the ANO party to become the largest political party in parliament, far surpassing the ruling coalition of Prime Minister Petr Filala. Babis is seeking the support of two other smaller parties in the new parliamentary term to form a coalition government or a minority government.
For Fiala, the EU, and NATO, Babis's victory is bitter. Babis is seen as a doppelganger of US President Donald Trump and is also a successful billionaire like Trump. He served as Prime Minister of the Czech Republic from 2017 to 2021, and now he has returned to power like Trump. This shows that Babis's recent election victory was most decisively due to Fiala's failure in power over the past four years. Therefore, the new era will be a return to the old one in this country.
The Czech Republic is about to have a new prime minister, and aid to Ukraine is likely to be uncertain.
Babis's return to power has caused considerable concern within the EU and NATO, as well as anxiety in Ukraine. Fiala is renowned in the EU and NATO for his fervent support of Ukraine and his fierce opposition to Russia. Babis, on the other hand, is the opposite. Along with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, Babis has openly disagreed with the EU and NATO on many issues, including their stance towards Moscow and Kyiv. Therefore, it is now impossible to rule out the possibility that Babis's return to power will lead to a halt or significant reduction in all financial and military aid to Ukraine. The Czech Republic might even veto or obstruct the EU and NATO from disbursing large sums of direct financial or military aid to Kyiv. If this trio joins forces, the impact of this seismic event will be even greater.
