The African Union (AU) is promoting a symbolic and strategic initiative to restore the continent's authentic image on the world map, thereby contributing to affirming Africa's position, identity, and influence in the global context.
According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Africa, this initiative was first proposed by Togo at the 39th regular summit of the African Union last February, and was subsequently officially adopted by African leaders under the name "Revising the Map of Africa" initiative.
The initiative aims to correct centuries-old inaccuracies from traditional map projections such as Mercator, which have significantly diminished the perceived size and scale of Africa globally.
After being approved by the African Union, Togo brought the issue to the United Nations to lobby the international community to use more accurate geographical representations. According to the African Union, adjusting the map is not just a matter of geographical engineering, but also a crucial step in correcting historical biases and protecting Africa's dignity and voice on the international stage.
African Union Vice Chair Selma Malika Haddadi argues that the Mercator projection has inadvertently perpetuated a false perception of Africa as "small," despite it being the world's second-largest continent. She calls for a shift to more equitable systems, such as the Equal Earth map, that more accurately reflect the planet's surface area.
To implement the initiative, the African Union Commission plans to organize a continental workshop involving member states, experts, educators , and civil society organizations to develop a concrete action plan. The new mapping standards will be integrated into educational programs, digital platforms, and international publishing tools.
The African Union is also working with the United Nations, the World Bank, and technology companies to broaden support for the campaign.
According to observers, accurately reflecting the scale of Africa will not only contribute to changing global perceptions but also facilitate attracting investment, promoting development cooperation, and enhancing the continent's standing in the 21st century.
