Difficult journeys...

On July 14, 2024, at the 9th Dream Dance Open Ballroom Dance Championship held in Gia Lai , the team from the Green Sprouts Talent Club from Quang Tri left a strong impression on the audience with their professional dance moves and achieved 4 Gold Medals, 3 Silver Medals, and 17 Bronze Medals. This was a major tournament with the participation of more than 1,000 athletes from provinces and cities with strong ballroom dance movements nationwide.

The achievements of the Green Sprouts Talent Club contribute to affirming the quality of training as well as the development potential of ballroom dancing in the province. This achievement bears the strong imprint of female coach Hoang Ngoc Tu Nhi, the club's head.

“When I was young, due to my family circumstances, I didn't have the opportunity to be exposed to music or any art form. As a university student, I was coincidentally invited to join the dance club at Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry, and that's when I discovered my talent for dancing. Watching my friends practice, after just a few times, I felt the movement to the music and memorized the steps very quickly. From those initial awkward moments, I was guided by the seniors and my friends in social dancing and gradually fell in love with the graceful steps of this art form,” Tú Nhi recounted.

In 2008, Tu Nhi studied ballroom dancing with Mr. Hoang Cong Thuc, a dedicated and experienced instructor in this field in Hue City. However, as a student with limited time and financial resources, Tu Nhi only learned basic techniques, mainly for recreational dancing.

Later, she independently researched and learned more, and began participating in sports dance clubs in Dong Ha City. After graduating with a degree in fine arts education from Hue University of Arts, she had more opportunities to study and train with several national champions and athletes in sports dance, such as Nguyen Chi Anh and Cao Thi Van Diem.

In 2014, Tu Nhi participated in her first competitive ballroom dance competition in Hai Duong. She shared: “It was my first time competing outside the province, and everything was new to me. At this competition, due to poor health from the long journey, I didn't achieve the results I hoped for. However, this was a milestone that motivated me to train harder.”

Through hard work, perseverance, and passion, Tú Nhi diligently traveled to Hanoi once a week to directly learn from national ballroom dance champion Cao Thị Vân Diễm. Besides the geographical distance, this young girl also faced significant financial difficulties, as the cost of each dance lesson with the champion was considerable. Therefore, to make ends meet and continue pursuing her passion, she made the most of her time each day, working as an advertising designer, teaching art on a contract basis at Trưng Vương School (Đông Hà City), and only managing to practice on weekends.

During this time, Nhi also regularly participated in ballroom dancing competitions both within and outside the province to gain more experience and exchange knowledge with others who shared the same passion. Her efforts soon bore fruit as she consistently achieved many commendable results at provincial and national ballroom dancing competitions. From there, Nhi gained more motivation to inspire passion and formed the idea of continuing to nurture ballroom dancing talents in the province...

Nurturing green shoots

“Since 2012, I have been teaching social dance to students aged 30-70 in Dong Ha City. However, it wasn't until I officially started working as a dance instructor for students at Trung Vuong School that I came up with the idea of opening extra classes for them outside of school hours. Ballroom dancing has many benefits for children. The graceful movements of their hands and feet to the music, the awareness and understanding of their bodies, make them love themselves more and appreciate their physical beauty; dancing also helps children relax after stressful school hours,” Tu Nhi said.

Since 2014, Tu Nhi has run dance classes for children at the Provincial Cultural and Film Center with a friend, under the name Quang Tri Dancesport. In 2015, she taught after-school dance classes at Trung Vuong School under the name Trung Vuong Dancesport. In 2017, after years of nurturing the idea and preparing all the necessary conditions, Tu Nhi established the Green Sprouts Talent Club and decided to focus on developing the club, which she continues to this day.

From just 5 students initially, the club now has a peak of 50 students. On occasions such as International Children's Day (June 1st), the Mid-Autumn Festival, or New Year's celebrations, the club organizes performances to give the children the opportunity to experience the stage and showcase what they have learned.

"To excel in ballroom dancing, you need genuine passion, not just following a trend, because this sport is very demanding. Therefore, in every lesson, I always remind my students that ballroom dancing is only for those who train seriously, diligently, and persistently. Even a single movement in a dance routine can take a student a whole month to understand and master," she confided.

Under the dedicated training and guidance of coach Hoang Ngoc Tu Nhi, these young talents have truly matured, confidently participating in sports dance competitions organized by provinces and cities, as well as some national competitions.

In addition to her work in training and teaching competitive ballroom dancing, Tu Nhi actively participates in many national ballroom dancing competitions as a coach and judge. She also attends training courses led by the champion dance couple Phan Hien and Khanh Thi to improve her skills.

Some notable achievements of students from the Green Sprouts Talent Club at national competitions include: Nguyen Cuu Phuc Anh winning 4th and 5th place in the junior age group (Chachacha and Rumba) at the 2016 National Youth Championship and Ballroom Dance Cup; Vo Ngoc Gia Linh winning 5th/18 in the B4 Latin dance category and 7th/18 in the A5 Latin dance category at the 2023 National Youth Championship and Ballroom Dance Cup...

“Dancesports has helped me develop my strengths, overcome my weaknesses, and become more confident and assertive in society. That’s why I always want my students to have the opportunity to transform themselves, to stand on the dance floor and fully embrace their passion.”

"In the future, I will continue to pursue my path of coaching and teaching ballroom dancing to my students and trainees, focusing on high-quality dance routines and striving to create more opportunities for them to hone their skills and showcase their talents," Tú Nhi added.
