According to research from Counterpoint Research , in the fourth quarter of 2025, the iPhone Air accounted for only a small percentage of total iPhone shipments in China. Notably, Apple achieved a 28% growth in phone sales, capturing 22% of the smartphone market share in the country.
Analysis from Counterpoint Research suggests the main drivers are the strong appeal of the iPhone 17 series and the acceleration of supply.
Meanwhile, the Pro line, with its unique new camera design, and the basic versions offering double the storage of the iPhone 16 at the same price, have both received positive market feedback.
Regarding iPhone Air sales, experts believe the product has made too many trade-offs. "The late launch, along with the compromises between thinness and features, have given the iPhone Air a slow start," said senior analyst Ivan Lam.
Nevertheless, according to Lam, the iPhone Air remains an important product. Not only is it a way to explore the direction of ultra-thin design, but the ultra-thin iPhone also has long-term structural implications for the eSIM smartphone market in China.
AppleInsider also agrees with this view, arguing that sales reports inevitably only reflect part of the story. This perspective is similar to what has been said about the Apple Vision Pro.
Specifically, these types of analyses and reports rely on supply chain data. However, as CEO Tim Cook has repeatedly stated, relying solely on supply chain data is a mistake.
The truth about iPhone demand is far more complex. AppleInsider says it has observed iPhone demand for decades and identified a few patterns.
Accordingly, the most premium iPhones typically sell fastest in the fall. Enthusiasts and those willing to spend money buy them early. Demand then extends into the following months. More "accessible" iPhone models usually see a gradual increase in sales towards spring, by which time those wanting the Pro version have already purchased them.
The iPhone Air is likely to be more successful and have a longer market share than the Mini and Plus versions in terms of price. It's a premium product, and over time, it could yield better profit margins.
