In 2024, the province's agricultural sector continued to achieve many positive results in rice production, livestock farming, and especially in the field of aquaculture.
Mr. Chau Cong Bang, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that rice production has adapted well to climate change conditions, with yields exceeding planned targets; the rice market shows positive signs, encouraging production development. The rice variety structure has shifted towards high-quality rice and specialty fragrant rice. Rice and shrimp farming areas have been established according to quality standards to meet market demands.
The development of biosecure livestock farming is linked to disease prevention and control; outbreaks are quickly controlled and contained, preventing widespread transmission. Production organization methods continue to innovate; many effective production models are being replicated. Agricultural production has gradually increased its added value, and OCOP products in the province have increased in both quantity, quality, and scale.
Aquaculture continues to assert its leading role in the development of the agricultural economy . Aquaculture production increased compared to 2023 thanks to the application of science and technology to increase productivity, especially in super-intensive shrimp farming, and the diversification of species and farming methods. Shrimp seed production has made breakthroughs in scale and quality.
Select the right breeding stock before stocking.
Building on the achievements, at the beginning of 2025, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development proactively guided the framework for the 2025 aquaculture stocking schedule. Specifically, for intensive and super-intensive farming of tiger shrimp and whiteleg shrimp, it is recommended to raise one crop per year for tiger shrimp (for farms with adequate infrastructure, water sources, and appropriate procedures, a second crop may be possible), with the remaining time focused on pond renovation. For whiteleg shrimp, it is recommended to raise two crops per year (for farms with adequate infrastructure, water sources, and appropriate procedures, more than two crops per year may be possible), with the remaining time focused on pond renovation. The stocking time for the main farming season (season 1) is from January to the end of July; season 2, from November to December.
For improved extensive shrimp farming (tiger shrimp), it is recommended to raise two crops per year; however, there must be a period of land preparation and drying before stocking the new crop, at least 15-30 days between the two crops. For whiteleg shrimp, pilot stocking is only permitted with the approval of the provincial-level specialized fisheries management agency. Stocking times: Crop 1, from January to the end of July; Crop 2, from November to December.
Whiteleg shrimp are raised in two cycles per year.
For extensive shrimp farming (tiger shrimp), farming can be done year-round, with stocking occurring from January to December. However, to ensure disease safety, households (farming facilities) should interrupt the farming cycle at least once a year during the period of dredging and cleaning the ponds to improve the soil and mud (from August 15th to October 15th). In particular, based on the weather and salinity of each region, localities should adjust the water intake schedule accordingly. It is recommended to use a selective harvesting and restocking method, with a nursery pond for shrimp larvae for the initial stage of 3-4 weeks; stocking should be staggered, with stocking every 1.0-1.5 months.
"Units need to proactively coordinate with the Ca Mau Meteorological and Hydrological Station and the Irrigation Sub-Department to regularly update information on weather, hydrometeorology, and saline intrusion to promptly forecast and advise aquaculture facilities to proactively respond during production. Monitor the implementation of the seasonal schedule in the province, coordinate with the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sub-Department on the recorded animal disease situation in aquatic animals (if any) and make timely adjustments to ensure the seasonal schedule is effective. Proactively coordinate with the Agricultural Extension Center and localities to disseminate information and guidance to aquaculture farmers through various methods and mass media, the Ca Mau Agriculture Software; support localities in determining criteria and conditions for aquaculture areas, in order to guide seasonal schedules, species to be raised, and types of farming... suitable to the actual situation," Mr. Bang emphasized.
