At the press conference and briefing for the first quarter of 2024 on the afternoon of April 9th, Mr. Do Quang Hung, Deputy Director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Ca Mau province, provided information on the land clearance situation for the Ca Mau Airport expansion and upgrade project.

By 2030, Ca Mau Airport could handle up to 1 million passengers per year.

According to Mr. Hung, as of now, according to the plan submitted to the Ministry of Transport , Ca Mau airport will be expanded by approximately 230 hectares, affecting more than 1,000 households.

"While awaiting the Prime Minister's approval of the investment plan, the People's Committee of Ca Mau province assigned the Department of Natural Resources and Environment to record, measure, and inventory the entire current state of houses, trees, and land."

"Once the policy is approved, we will implement it immediately to ensure it stays on schedule," Mr. Hung said.

The People's Committee of Ca Mau province also directed the People's Committee of Ca Mau city to strengthen efforts to mobilize and educate affected organizations, households, and individuals to comply with policies and agree to the land reclamation plan earlier than the stipulated time.

Ca Mau Airport dates back to the French colonial era, is a 3C-class airport, with a runway 1,500m long and 30m wide, capable of handling aircraft such as ATR72, E190 and smaller.

The airport has a designed capacity of 200,000 passengers per year, serving 150 passengers per hour during peak times.

For many years, the airport has operated only one flight route, between Ca Mau and Ho Chi Minh City and vice versa, with a frequency of 5 flights per week.

From April 29, 2023, the direct flight route between Ca Mau and Hanoi was put into operation with a frequency of three flights per week. The flights are always busy, but due to limited runway space at the airport, aircraft have to reduce load and frequency.

According to the plan, by 2030, Ca Mau Airport will have the following items: investment in the construction of a new runway measuring 2,400x45m to the north, 180m away from the existing runway; and construction of a new taxiway connecting the existing apron and the new runway to the north.

At the same time, the apron will be expanded to accommodate four parking positions for medium-sized, narrow-body aircraft (A320/321...).

In addition, the existing passenger terminal will be upgraded to handle up to one million passengers per year, while maintaining the location of the civil aviation area as per the approved plan. The total estimated investment is 2,253 billion VND (excluding land acquisition costs).

Currently, Ca Mau Airport has one runway measuring 1,500 x 30m, capable of handling E190 aircraft (in reduced load) and ATR72 aircraft. The airport also operates only the Ho Chi Minh City - Ca Mau route, which does not meet the travel needs of the people and the growth of the aviation industry.

According to Decision 4149, the planned location of the runway and civil aviation area in the north does not utilize the existing civil aviation area because Code C aircraft such as the A320 and A321 operating on the apron would violate airspace regulations.
