Tens of thousands of acacia trees cover the mountain
Every day at 5 pm, Ms. Pham Thi Tra in Thuy Son 1 residential group, Thuy Nguyen ward and members of the cycling group meet at the foot of Son Dao mountain to exercise. On late autumn afternoons, the gentle sunlight filters through the acacia forest canopy, the fresh air makes her feel relaxed after a stressful day at work.
Son Dao Mountain is a place for Ms. Tra and many people around this area to exercise. Thanks to the cooperation of local authorities, people and organizations, the forest patches that were burned since the end of 2024 and devastated by Typhoon Yagi on Son Dao Mountain have been covered with green again.
Son Dao Mountain is a landscape highlight of Thuy Nguyen ward, a "green lung" that regulates the air. After the Yagi storm in September 2024, many areas of forest trees were broken. Restoring trees is not only to regenerate nature but also to preserve the soil, water and beauty of the homeland.
According to the Farmers' Association of Thuy Nguyen Ward, the locality was supported with 10,000 seedlings and fertilizers from local benefactors to re-green Son Dao Mountain. The campaign to re-green Son Dao Mountain has been implemented and spread strongly since March 2025. The locality continues to call on the community to participate in the tree planting campaign and restore Son Dao Mountain with specific actions.
People and businesses can directly plant trees, greening bare land and hills, contributing to improving the living environment for people and animals. Or they can also contribute seedlings, working days to clear and plant forests, take care of newly planted trees, spread the word or call on organizations, individuals and communities to join hands. After each tree planting session, the residential groups continue to go up the mountain to clear grass, prepare the land and plant additional trees. From March 2025 to now, the entire bare area on the western slope of Son Dao mountain has been covered with rows of straight young trees.

Not only is it a government movement, many people voluntarily contribute seedlings, fertilizers, and labor. In addition to planting trees, the locality also mobilizes donations of seedlings and fertilizers from philanthropists.
Ms. Le Thi Hong Van, owner of a garment factory in the ward, shared that because of her love for trees, responding to the call of the local government and the Women's Union of the ward, she bought 20,000 acacia trees to contribute to greening Son Dao mountain. Together with Ms. Van, Song Gia Investment and Development Cooperative donated more than 1 ton of vermicompost to support tree growth. Businesses in the area contributed hundreds of working days and means of transporting trees...
Spread the green living spirit
Tree planting activities on Son Dao mountain also spread the spirit of green living in the community. Some schools register for the extracurricular activity “Green Sunday”, taking students to the mountain to take care of trees, both educating environmental awareness and training a sense of responsibility.
Every Thuy Duong resident is more aware of protecting the forest, not burning grass, not littering, actively participating in cleaning and taking care of plants. For example, the running group “Run for Son Dao” consisting of sports lovers in Hai Phong also actively contributes. In sportswear, they run, clean up trash, and plant trees, spreading the message “for a green Son Dao”. Those who run through the mountains are encouraged to bring a small tree to plant in the open forest area.
Mr. Pham Hoang Hop, a member of the group, said that he had witnessed Son Dao being stripped bare after the natural disaster and had personally planted trees to bring back green to the forests on the mountain. He and the members of the group were proud to have contributed a small part to the revival of the mountain. Trees help to retain soil, prevent erosion, regulate the air, create landscapes and, most of all, create sustainable livelihoods for the people. When the forest revives, birds and small animals will also return, and the natural life cycle will continue.

It is known that the local government is implementing a plan to coordinate with the agriculture and environment sector to develop a plan to care for and protect bare trees on mountainous areas, ensuring a survival rate of over 90%. According to Vice Chairman of Thuy Nguyen Ward People's Committee Bui Van Bien, planting trees is just the beginning, requiring the synchronous participation of the entire political system and people to care for and protect, not to let the situation of planting and leaving it there. The ward government is developing a long-term plan to protect old and newly planted forest areas, and at the same time coordinate with the forestry unit to regularly inspect, water, prevent and fight forest fires, and mobilize businesses to participate in forest care.
The models of “community forest” and “youth forest” have also been proposed to be deployed, spreading the spirit and awareness of forest protection. The ward aims that by 2030, the entire Son Dao mountain area will be covered with green and form an ecological forest model associated with community tourism. The active cooperation of the entire population in planting and protecting forests, greening bare hills is the solution to contribute to protecting the ecological environment, improving the landscape and responding to climate change, towards improving the quality of life of the people and the sustainable development of the city.
