The government, the people, and businesses are working together to reforest Son Dao mountain.

Tens of thousands of acacia trees cover the mountain.

Every day at 5 PM, Ms. Pham Thi Tra, residing in Thuy Son 1 residential area, Thuy Nguyen ward, and members of her cycling group meet at the foot of Son Dao mountain to exercise. On these late autumn afternoons, the gentle sunlight filters through the acacia forest canopy, and the fresh air makes her feel relaxed after a stressful day at work.

Son Dao Mountain is a popular sports area for Ms. Tra and many other people in the surrounding area. Thanks to the joint efforts of the local government, residents, and organizations, the patches of forest that were burned in late 2024 and devastated after Typhoon Yagi on Son Dao Mountain have been reforested.

Son Dao Mountain is a scenic highlight of Thuy Nguyen ward, serving as a "green lung" that regulates the air. After Typhoon Yagi in September 2024, many areas of forest trees were broken and felled. Restoring the trees is not only about regenerating nature but also about preserving the soil, water, and maintaining the beauty of the homeland.

According to the Farmers' Association of Thuy Nguyen Ward, the locality received 10,000 saplings and fertilizer from benefactors in the area to reforest Son Dao Mountain. The campaign to reforest Son Dao Mountain has been implemented and spread strongly from March 2025 to the present. The locality continues to call on the community to participate in the tree planting campaign and restore Son Dao Mountain through concrete actions.

People and businesses can directly plant trees, greening barren land and hills, contributing to improving the living environment for humans and animals. They can also contribute seedlings, labor for clearing and planting forests, caring for newly planted trees, spreading awareness, or calling on organizations, individuals, and communities to join hands in this effort. After each tree-planting campaign, neighborhood groups continue to clear weeds, prepare the soil, and plant additional trees on the mountain. From March 2025 to the present, the entire barren area on the western slope of Son Dao mountain has been covered with rows of straight young trees.

The tree-planting activity on Son Dao mountain spreads the spirit of green living in the community.

It's not just a government initiative; many people voluntarily contribute seedlings, fertilizer, and labor. In addition to planting trees, the local authorities also solicit donations of seedlings and fertilizer from philanthropists.

Ms. Le Thi Hong Van, owner of a garment factory in the ward, shared that, out of love for greenery and in response to the call from the local government and the Women's Association of the ward, she purchased 20,000 acacia trees to contribute to greening Son Dao mountain. Along with Ms. Van, the Song Gia Investment and Development Cooperative donated over 1 ton of vermicompost to support the trees' growth. Businesses in the area contributed hundreds of man-days and transportation for the trees...

Spreading the spirit of green living

The tree-planting activities on Son Dao mountain also spread the spirit of green living in the community. Several schools registered for the "Green Sunday" extracurricular activity, taking students up the mountain to care for trees, both educating them about environmental awareness and fostering a sense of responsibility.

Every resident of Thuy Duong is more aware of protecting the forest, refraining from burning grass and littering, and actively participating in cleaning up and caring for plants. For example, the "Run for Son Dao" running group, comprised of sports enthusiasts in Hai Phong, is also actively contributing. Dressed in sportswear, they run, clean up trash, and plant trees, spreading the message "for a green Son Dao." Those running across the mountain are encouraged to bring a small sapling to plant in the cleared forest areas.

Pham Hoang Hop, a member of the group, said that having witnessed Son Dao mountain barren after natural disasters and having personally planted trees to bring back greenery to the mountain's forests, he and the group members feel proud to have contributed a small part to the mountain's revival. Trees help retain soil, prevent erosion, regulate the air, create a beautiful landscape, and most importantly, provide sustainable livelihoods for the people. When the forest is restored, birds and small animals will also return, and the natural life cycle will continue.

Mount Son Dao before Typhoon Yagi was a favorite destination for running clubs.

It is understood that the local authorities are implementing a plan in coordination with the agriculture and environment sector to develop a plan for caring for and protecting reforested areas on hillsides, ensuring a survival rate of over 90%. According to Bui Van Bien, Vice Chairman of the Thuy Nguyen Ward People's Committee, planting new trees is only the beginning; it requires the synchronized involvement of the entire political system and the people to care for and protect them, preventing the situation where trees are planted but then left untouched. The ward authorities are developing a long-term plan to protect existing forest areas and plant new ones, while coordinating with the forest protection unit to regularly inspect, water, and prevent forest fires, and mobilizing businesses to participate in forest care.

The "community forest" and "youth forest" models are also proposed for implementation, spreading the spirit and awareness of forest protection. The ward aims to have the entire Son Dao mountain area greened by 2030, forming an ecological forest model linked to community tourism. The active participation of all citizens in planting and protecting forests and greening barren hills is a solution that contributes to protecting the ecological environment, improving the landscape, and responding to climate change, aiming to improve the quality of life for people and the sustainable development of the city.
