Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has just approved the adjustment of the Master Plan for the Development of Vietnam's Seaport System for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050. One of the important adjustments is that Ho Chi Minh City's seaport is planned to have the potential to become a special seaport.

Ho Chi Minh City's seaport is one of the three largest seaports in Vietnam, along with Hai Phong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau seaports (Photo: LT).

Ho Chi Minh City's seaports belong to seaport group number 4. According to the plan, by 2030, the volume of goods handled through seaport group number 4 will reach 500 - 564 million tons; the passenger volume will reach 2.8 - 3.1 million passengers.

The vision for 2050 is to meet demand through goods with an average growth rate of approximately 3.5 - 3.8% per year and passenger transport with an average growth rate of approximately 0.9 - 1.0% per year.

Simultaneously, complete investment in the Cai Mep Ha port complex and continue investing in the Can Gio international transshipment port area in Ho Chi Minh City to form a large-scale international transshipment port cluster of regional and international significance at the Cai Mep estuary (including the Cai Mep and Can Gio port areas). In addition, complete the relocation of ports on the Saigon River and continue research on relocating other port areas to align with Ho Chi Minh City's urban development.

According to the latest announcement from consulting firm Alphaliner, Ho Chi Minh City's seaport ranked among the top 30 largest container ports in the world in 2023, based on throughput. The port held the 20th position in the ranking, with a throughput of nearly 8.4 million TEU.

In Southeast Asia, Ho Chi Minh City's seaport ranks 5th, after Singapore, Port Kelang and Tanjung Pelepas (both in Malaysia) and Laem Chabang (Thailand).

Previously, according to Lloyd's List maritime magazine, Ho Chi Minh City's seaport maintained its position amidst the slow economic growth nationwide following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Vietnam has the potential to develop within the strategic supply chain associated with this seaport. The future of Ho Chi Minh City's seaport has the potential for further expansion, and the area is undergoing significant changes.

Specifically, the Can Gio International Transshipment Port project, located near Ho Chi Minh City's seaport, with an estimated investment of $6 billion, if approved, could be the largest transshipment port in the country and have a significant impact on trade with countries in the region.

Associated with the Southern key economic region, Ho Chi Minh City's seaport is part of Group 4 – the most developed group of seaports in the country. Along with the Cai Mep - Thi Vai area, the Ho Chi Minh City container port cluster has become one of the most important port areas in the global supply chain.

This is also one of the first seaports in the country to receive many large ships. According to data from the Ho Chi Minh City Maritime Port Authority, to date, the port has received approximately 8,044 visits from ships with a tonnage exceeding its design capacity.

As a result, the volume of goods passing through the seaport has continuously grown, actively meeting and supporting import and export activities in Ho Chi Minh City and the Southeast region.

According to statistics from the Vietnam Maritime Administration, in 2023, the volume of goods handled through Ho Chi Minh City's seaports reached over 167.2 million tons, with a total of over 21,000 ship calls. The number of passengers passing through the port reached approximately 34,000.

Experts also assess that the port area of Ho Chi Minh City has many ports that have been invested in on a large scale, with modern and synchronized facilities, high-productivity handling equipment, and fast ship turnaround times.

Among them, Tan Cang Cat Lai port is the port area with the largest volume of container throughput in the country, receiving ships with a tonnage of 20,000 - 30,000 tons or larger (reduced load), mainly transporting goods on Asian routes.
