There is a Tan An like that.

I returned to Tan An commune while the mist still lingered over the lush green rice fields. In the distance, the sound of roosters crowing mingled with the hum of engines from boats carrying agricultural products to the market. I suddenly thought, even in the age of Industry 4.0, there is still a Tan An that retains the pristine beauty of a Southern Vietnamese village – full of community spirit, a glorious past, a modern present, and a promising future.

A glorious past

Throughout two protracted wars of resistance, the people and soldiers of this area achieved many resounding victories, earning the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces during the anti-American war for national salvation. Sitting with me in her spacious concrete house, Mrs. Le Tien Huong, a veteran revolutionary cadre, slowly recounted her memories of a time of intense fighting. The Giong Tra Den base was located at the border gateway, adjacent to Cambodia, surrounded by the Hau River, the Tien River, and the Vinh An Canal. The terrain was rugged, with numerous canals and waterways crisscrossing. Inside was a dense bamboo forest. The bamboo sheltered the soldiers during bombing raids and also provided favorable conditions for building secret tunnels, blocking enemy attacks by land and water.

"During the war, the people's support was the decisive factor in the victory of the revolution. The people sheltered cadres, provided food and information to the revolution. That sacrifice created a solid foundation for the revolutionary movement to survive and develop to this day," Ms. Huong shared.

Not only were they brave in battle, but after the country's reunification, the people of Tan An also demonstrated a spirit of hard work and production. Mr. Huynh Quang Ngu - former Standing Deputy Secretary of the Tan Chau Town Party Committee (before the merger) recalled: “In 1977, in just 100 days and nights, the people excavated and filled more than 500,000 cubic meters of earth, completing an 8-meter wide, 23-kilometer long canal passing through 5 communes. Thanks to that canal, farmers reclaimed and restored land, switching from growing one rice crop to two, then three crops. The area increased from 2,000 hectares in 1976 to 12,000 hectares in 1995. From a shortage of rice to eat, the people rose to grow rice for export.”

Current innovation

Tan An has changed a great deal today. The government has boldly shifted from a management mindset to a governance-creating-partnership mindset, creating all the conditions for people and businesses to develop. The people have raised their awareness and joined hands with the State to build new rural areas and advanced new rural areas, with the motto "The people know, the people discuss, the people do, the people inspect, the people supervise, and the people benefit." Mr. Trinh Van Dut, Director of Tan Phu A1 Agricultural Cooperative, shared: "From small-scale farming, people have shifted to collective farming, strengthening linkages and connections with businesses to ensure stable markets."

Recently, during the government's gift-giving event for the people on National Day, September 2nd, Comrade La Hong Phong - Secretary of the Party Committee of Tan An commune - affirmed: "The most valuable thing in Tan An is the consensus of the people. The Party Committee and the government are always close to the people, caring for the people, so the people trust and cooperate with us. We will continue to build an advanced new rural commune so that the people can have a prosperous, comfortable, and peaceful life."

The rhythm of life today shows that Tan An has not only escaped poverty but is also moving towards sustainable development. The sound of harvesting machines and the laughter of children blend with the rhythm of the Tien River, a testament to a rural area steadily progressing towards the future.

A breakthrough future

To promote the development of Tan An, in recent years, the province and local authorities have invested in many key projects. A notable example is the Tan An bridge across the Kenh Xang river, a project that contributes to expanding development space, forming a riverside urban area along National Highway 80B, and connecting to the Vinh Xuong International Border Gate. As a result, the time to transport agricultural products from the Mekong Delta to the border has been shortened by more than an hour, opening up opportunities for export to Cambodia and other ASEAN countries.

If a glorious past serves as a foundation, a modern, innovative present as a springboard, then the future is the aspiration for breakthrough. The First Party Congress of Tan An Commune, for the 2025-2030 term, has set a very clear direction: By 2030, 70% of agricultural land will be converted to high-tech production; safe vegetable and fruit growing areas will be established in Bau Oc - Lang Dop, Con Liet Si, and Tan Hau B2. In addition, the locality aims to develop eco-tourism and spiritual tourism, exploiting the potential of Phu Son Tu relic site and Con Liet Si, connecting the Tien River - craft village - culinary tourism route.

“The image of tourists leisurely strolling along the waterfront, enjoying local specialties, and listening to historical stories… will open up a new economic sector, preserving the essence of the countryside while creating livelihoods for the people. We have high expectations for this new model,” Comrade La Hong Phong expressed. Simultaneously, the locality is determined to improve infrastructure, upgrade healthcare and education, ensure 90% of schools meet standards, 100% of households have access to clean water, and 95% of waste is collected. The goal is to achieve an average per capita income of over 90 million VND/year by 2030, reduce the poverty rate to below 1.6%, and improve the people's living standards.

Bidding farewell to Tan An at sunset, my heart was filled with excitement and confidence about this locality because now "the will of the Party and the aspirations of the people" have blended together, determined to lead this heroic land, along with the rest of the country, into a new era.
