Is attitude more important than skill?

To go from intern to full-time employee

To prepare for internships, in addition to the knowledge taught in school, some students like Vo Ngoc Chi Hieu (final year of Multimedia Communication major at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City) believe that they should proactively train themselves or register for external courses to improve their skills, foreign language proficiency, and overall capabilities.

In addition, students should focus on their "personal strengths" when applying for internships, according to Hieu. A male student currently interning in marketing at VNG Group shared his experience: "You should assess whether you are a good fit for the position you are applying for, based on the company's vision, mission, and commitment. For internship positions, companies don't require extensive experience but will pay attention to the applicant's personality to find someone suitable who can commit to the company long-term."

Chi Hieu chose to start an internship early to increase his opportunities for self-development.

Other students, such as Dinh Van Tien (a 4th-year public relations student at Van Lang University), proactively sought internship opportunities at companies during their studies.

Tien recounted that when he was a second-year student, he was accepted as an intern at Timo Bank, a digital bank. After two years of hard work, Tien has officially become a growth specialist at the bank, rising from an intern position.

Sharing his secret to becoming a full-time employee after an internship, Tien said: "First, students should clearly identify whether the company has a need for recruitment. If so, they should take advantage of the opportunity to demonstrate a good work attitude. Almost every business appreciates employees who create valuable products and generate high profits. Besides that, professional skills are indispensable, so interns should try to learn from their colleagues and mentors." Online courses make the job easier."

What should students keep in mind during their internship?

To ensure a highly effective internship, Vo Ngoc Chi Hieu suggests that students should discuss their requirements for interns in detail with their supervisors and proactively seek feedback from managers to learn from their experiences. Furthermore, students should carefully consider their choice of company, as some organizations do not allocate time for mentoring new interns.

Meanwhile, Dinh Van Tien advised interns to keep a record of the products they create to include in their job applications. According to Tien, during their internship, students should strive to work hard and expand their network of relationships within the company and elsewhere. "Every profession needs relationships to facilitate information exchange and improve work efficiency," Tien shared.

Master Tran Nam, Head of Student Affairs Department at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City, noted that the transition from the classroom environment to the workplace is a process. Therefore, students need to proactively seek information related to their professional work and practice.

"To have a successful internship, many factors must be considered. Students need to have a thorough understanding of the specialized knowledge related to their internship position. For example, tourism students need to synthesize knowledge related to tour guiding and tour operation… Next, they should seek out important information about the company culture, avoiding superficial learning that wastes time for both parties," Mr. Nam noted.

In addition, Ms. Huynh Huu Truc Phuong, Director of Enso Vietnam Training and Consulting Company, stated that no company wants to accept interns with good academic results but lacking soft skills, nor does any company like employees with knowledge and skills but insufficient health to work.

Regarding job opportunities after the internship, Ms. Truc Phuong emphasized that the work attitude during the internship is one of the deciding factors. "Companies highly value diligent interns who know how to apply their learned knowledge to their work. The company will 'retain' a few potential candidates to continue working with the business. However, even if interns have fairly good abilities but want to stay, they should confidently express their wishes to their supervisor," Ms. Truc Phuong concluded.
