Many people were outraged by the students' offensive actions and words directed at music teacher Phan Thi H., but they also felt uneasy seeing Ms. H. holding two sandals in her hands, chasing and throwing them at the students.
Looking at this incident, we see "problems" from both sides. Not only did the students exhibit inappropriate attitudes and behaviors towards the teacher, but the teacher also acted in ways that weren't truly professional and didn't inspire authority in the classroom.
Both the teacher and the student acted inappropriately.
Videos related to the incident involving the teacher and students at Van Phu Secondary School have caused much concern. The issue of students being disrespectful or rude to teachers is not new; it's reported in the media almost every school year. However, this incident was collective in nature, involving many male and female students.
Some students in class 7C locked the classroom door, used vulgar language and disrespectful behavior to insult the teacher. The students also cornered the teacher, threw sandals at her head, causing Ms. H. to faint on the tiled floor, but almost no students intervened, and no colleagues appeared.
In another video, the image shows a teacher holding two slippers in her hands, wildly waving them around, chasing students as they scatter, and throwing slippers at one student. This lack of composure reveals a lack of discipline and a tarnished image of the teacher…
Each video offers a different perspective. One video portrays the teacher's helplessness and resignation, and the students' unacceptable rudeness. Another video shows the chaotic relationship between the teacher and the students.
A male student cornered his female teacher at Van Phu Secondary School (Son Duong District, Tuyen Quang Province ) and then issued a challenge.
The teacher should be transferred to another job.
Over the past few days, public opinion has reflected on and analyzed many different aspects of the incident. The leaders of the Ministry of Education and Training have also issued directives; the Education Union has spoken out; and the principal of Van Phu Secondary School has been temporarily suspended from his duties…
While the authorities are resolving the issue, how will music teaching and learning proceed at Van Phu Secondary School? If the secondary school is classified as a type II or type III school, there will only be one music teacher. Only type I schools have two music teachers because there is only one music lesson per class per week.
If Van Phu Secondary School is classified as a type II or type III school, then the music teacher will have to teach the 7C class until the end of this school year and throughout grades 8 and 9. So, what will the teacher-student relationship be like in the following years? Furthermore, Ms. H. has just been disciplined by the school with a warning.
After this incident, will Ms. H. still have the enthusiasm and composure to teach, when every day she has to face countless worries and anxieties? Besides class 7C, will other students in the school want to study with Ms. H.?
Therefore, I think the education department of Son Duong District, Tuyen Quang Province, should consider transferring Ms. H. to another unit. This would be beneficial for both Ms. H. and the students at the school. The emotional wounds inflicted on both the teacher and the students in this incident are not easily erased overnight.
Here's another clip about the incident between the female teacher and the student.
Teachers should act like teachers, and students should act like students.
I believe that in the educational environment, especially in the teacher-student relationship, all behavior and actions must reflect a unique cultural aspect. Teachers must act like teachers, and students must act like students. Every teacher in the classroom must establish a position and authority in the eyes of their students. Teaching at any level is difficult, but teaching at the secondary school level is always more challenging because of the students' awkward, transitional age, requiring teachers to be both strict and flexible. Every action and word in teaching and education must be meticulous, proper, and have a limit.
In particular, it is essential to remain calm in all situations to handle pedagogical challenges, avoiding unnecessary and inappropriate actions such as chasing students.
In addition, the principal, the head of the Youth Union, and homeroom teachers need to take measures to educate and correct students when they exhibit actions or behaviors that are inappropriate towards teachers.
In Circular 32 of 2020, the Ministry of Education and Training clearly states the behaviors that students are not allowed to engage in, including: insulting the dignity and honor, and violating the physical integrity of teachers, staff, and other students of the school.
Therefore, schools need to implement strict educational measures and cooperate effectively with parents in educating students. Otherwise, the status of teachers will gradually diminish, many teachers will become isolated, and a segment of students will continue to be unruly. The consequences of this will be significant when some students disregard school rules and disrespect the teachers who teach them every day.
