According to Mr. Truong Van Tiep, his family's rice fields are located in a low-lying area, frequently flooded during the rainy season, making it difficult to cultivate rice or other crops. For many years, this area only yielded one spring crop, resulting in low economic efficiency and the land being left fallow.
Struggling to find a new direction, Mr. Tiep realized that sweet cabbage has a short growing season, is easy to cultivate, and is suitable for low-lying areas. In particular, when left to grow naturally without harvesting the leaves, the sweet cabbage will sprout stalks and produce vibrant yellow flowers, creating a beautiful landscape that is very suitable for developing agricultural tourism and experiential tourism models.
Based on that idea, he initially experimented with planting 4 sao (approximately 0.4 hectares). Accordingly, in October 2025, he renovated the field, creating raised beds and pathways between the cabbage plots to facilitate care. Seeing that this cabbage variety grew well, was suitable for the local soil conditions, and bloomed evenly and beautifully, in November 2025, he continued to improve the land and sow cabbage on an area of 1.5 acres. After only a short time, the cabbage field bloomed simultaneously, covering the area in a vibrant yellow, becoming a popular tourist destination.
Mr. Tiep said: "The model of growing sweet cabbage for its flowers focuses on nurturing healthy plants that produce even and beautiful flowers. Right from the planting stage, I sow more sparsely than when growing leafy vegetables, creating a reasonable distance for the plants to develop their stems, foliage, and flower stalks. During the care process, I limit pinching off the tips, do not harvest leaves, prune the plants, and apply balanced fertilizer to ensure the plants grow strong, the stems are healthy, and the flowers bloom in a concentrated manner."
Thanks to its rapid growth, the mustard field begins to flower in just over a month. When the flowers are in full bloom, the entire field is covered in a vibrant yellow, creating a rustic, natural landscape, perfect for tourists to take photos and check in. The flowering period lasts for about 1.5 months.
Not only focusing on growing flowers, Mr. Tiep also invested in beautifying the space, providing visitors with many photo opportunities such as erecting and decorating flagpoles, and arranging swings. Currently, the canola flower garden receives an average of about 20 visitors per day for sightseeing and photography, especially on weekends when the number of visitors increases 2-3 times compared to weekdays, with an entrance fee of 20,000 VND per person. Visitors are mainly locals and people from neighboring areas who love the countryside and want to experience and capture moments close to nature.
Ms. Phung Thi Kim from Diem He commune said: "I learned about Mr. Tiep's mustard flower garden through social media and came to visit and take pictures. Before, I only saw famous mustard flower gardens in the Northwest provinces, and I didn't think Lang Son had such a beautiful and vibrant garden. The space here is very clean, the scenery is harmonious, not only providing beautiful photos but also helping to relax the mind and relieve fatigue after daily pressures. I will share and introduce this model to my friends and relatives to visit and experience."
Besides growing canola flowers, in early January 2026, Mr. Tiep continued to plant an additional 6 acres of buckwheat flowers to serve tourists visiting during Tet (Lunar New Year). Speaking about his future plans, Mr. Tiep said: "Currently, there are still many unused land areas, while the location is adjacent to the Tham Khuyen - Tham Hai cave historical site in the commune. Taking advantage of this, I hope that households will cooperate to develop a model of flower cultivation combined with building a space to display and introduce agricultural products. Through this, we can not only create a destination for taking photos close to nature but also connect it with visiting the historical site."
Mr. Hoang Kim Huu, Vice Chairman of the Tan Van Commune People's Committee, said: "Mr. Tiep's canola flower cultivation model is a typical example of agricultural development linked to tourism in the commune. This model has the significance of spreading and inspiring creative approaches for many farmers in difficult areas. In the future, the Commune People's Committee aims to encourage people to develop flower garden models, check-in points, and experiential services associated with the Global Geopark route, especially the Tham Khuyen - Tham Hai Cave relic area, in order to diversify products serving tourists. The commune government will also support the dissemination of information, promotion, and guidance on implementing regulations correctly, ensuring environmental hygiene, safety, and preserving the landscape, gradually forming satellite tourist destinations, contributing to the development of community tourism and increasing income for the people."
