The final being held in Bilbao made travel difficult for Manchester United and Chelsea fans. |
The 2024/25 Europa League final was an all-English affair. Manchester United easily overcame Athletic Bilbao with a 7-1 aggregate score, winning 3-0 in the first leg and 4-1 at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Tottenham defeated Bodo/Glimt 2-0 in the second leg, advancing with a 5-1 aggregate score.
The final will take place at the San Mames stadium in Bilbao, which has a maximum capacity of 53,289 seats. With both clubs needing significantly more tickets, there have been calls to change the venue. However, UEFA granted the San Mames stadium the right to host the match in 2021, making a change of location impossible.
UEFA has decided that the final will still take place in the Basque city. In the last 15 years, there have been seven finals between teams from the same country in Europe, and none of them have had to change venues.
Travel has become a concern for Tottenham and Manchester United fans. Currently, according to SkyScanner , the cheapest flight from London to Bilbao on May 21st costs as much as £355 for a one-way ticket.
If flying back the next day, the cheapest ticket from Bilbao to London costs £175, departing at 7:40 am and requiring a layover in the Canary Islands. For a direct afternoon flight, fans would have to pay over £500, with very few tickets remaining.
