One-third ownership of a 4.5-year-old Nelore cow named Viatina-19 FIV Mara Imóveis was sold for $1.44 million at an auction in Arandú, Brazil, Newsweek reported on June 30. Agropecuária Casa Branca sold the cow to Nelore HRO for this record price, bringing its total value to $4.3 million. Half ownership of the same cow was previously sold in 2022 for $800,000, setting a record at the time.
The selling price of Viatina-19 FIV Mara Imóveis marks the true value of the Nelore breed in Brazil, demonstrating that some are willing to pay a large sum for high-quality genetic specimens. This price has also caused a stir in the international livestock market, reflecting the breed's value and solidifying its reputation worldwide.
The Nelore cattle breed is characterized by its bright white coat and distinctive large hump on its shoulder. They are naturally heat-tolerant thanks to their thick, dangling skin and possess sweat glands that are twice as large and 30% more numerous than many European cattle breeds, according to the University of Oklahoma.
This breed of cattle originates from India, named after the Nellore district in Andhra Pradesh state. Currently, it is one of the most important breeds in Brazil, primarily due to its resilience and ability to thrive on poor-quality roughage, thanks to its efficient metabolism.
They also breed easily, as the cows have wider pelvic bones and larger uteruses, while the calves require less human interaction to successfully develop to adulthood. Nelore cows are also resistant to some parasitic infections due to their dense skin structure, which makes it more difficult for blood-sucking insects to penetrate.
Thanks to possessing so many advantages mentioned above, this breed of cattle is among the most expensive in the world. In addition, they are also selectively bred to amplify desirable traits using artificial insemination.
Sales of Nelore bull semen account for 65% of the total artificial insemination market for bulls in Brazil. According to a 2018 Guardian report, sperm from the most valuable elite bulls can fetch up to $5,000 per 0.55 ml dose. There are approximately 167,000,000 Nelore bulls in Brazil, representing 80% of the country's total cattle population.
