Tottenham have reached an agreement to sign Mateus Fernandes. |
According to The Athletic , the London club is ahead of Manchester United in the race to sign Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United. Spurs have submitted the highest offer, reportedly around £85 million in fixed fees.
This figure shatters the club's transfer record. Previously, the most expensive transfer in Tottenham's history belonged to Dominic Solanke, who joined the team for £65 million in 2024.
Fernandes could become Tottenham's fifth signing this summer, following Martin Dubravka, Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi, and Andy Robertson. Notably, Spurs spent over £50 million on Van Hecke, while Senesi, Dubravka, and Robertson were all free transfers.
Spurs' spending spree shows that the board doesn't want a half-hearted overhaul. They are backing manager Roberto de Zerbi with substantial investments, aiming to bring the team back into contention for the title.
After a turbulent season and a struggle to avoid relegation, Tottenham need more youth, ball control, and new energy in midfield. Fernandes, with his good technical skills and age still allowing him much room for development, is seen as a suitable fit for the system De Zerbi wants to build.
Barring any surprises, Tottenham will have secured one of the most notable signings of the summer of 2026. More importantly, Spurs are reaffirming their ambition to remain in the title race and are preparing to enter the new season with a completely different look.
