A scene from the play Le Chi Vien
Lệ Chi Viên tells the tragic story of Nguyễn Trãi, a great minister, politician , writer, cultural figure, and thinker of the Vietnamese nation, who wholeheartedly supported Lê Lợi – King Lê Thái Tổ – in regaining independence for Đại Việt. Lê Thái Tông (played by artist Đình Toàn), the second emperor of the Lê dynasty, although newly enthroned, marked a period of prosperity in Vietnamese history. The young king and his ministers stabilized society, severely punished corruption, perfected the court's rituals and music, strengthened the army, revitalized education, and established a nationwide examination every three years to find talented scholars to help the king govern the people.
However, within the royal court, the power struggle for the crown prince by concubine Nguyen Thi Anh (played by Thanh Thuy) caused constant turmoil. Nguyen Thi Anh colluded with treacherous officials, falsely accusing concubine Ngo Thi Ngoc Giao (played by Hong Anh) of harming the crown prince... The climax of this historical drama is the conspiracy of treacherous officials within the court to force the young king Le Thai Tong to commit suicide. The young king died at Le Chi Vien, and all the blame was shifted by the treacherous officials onto the meritorious official Nguyen Trai (Quang Thao) and his wife, the scholar Nguyen Thi Lo (Hoang Trinh), leading to the Nguyen family's execution.
On stage, within the narrative, the intense intellectual battles between factions in the court, the dark conspiracies hidden and then exposed to the light of justice, along with the suffering of Nguyen Trai, falsely accused and killed along with his entire family, make the play full of conflict and deeply personal... Later, when King Le Thanh Tong investigated the matter thoroughly and the truth of the wrongful conviction became clear, he issued a decree pardoning Nguyen Trai, abolishing the court's order to kill his family, and appointing his descendants to official positions. Notably, Nguyen Trai's posthumous literary works have been carefully collected and preserved to this day.
The play is elaborately and grandly staged, with beautiful scenery and costumes, excellent sound and music , and dazzling lighting... All of these elements combine to create a positive effect for the historical stage script, realistically portraying a period of the Le Dynasty with many upheavals both inside and outside the royal palace.
