(TNO) A battery cover accessory called Batteriser will be sold on Amazon for $2.50 this fall, promising to extend battery life many times over by utilizing the remaining power before it's thrown in the trash.

According to researchers, before an AA battery is thrown in the trash, it actually still has about 80% of its working energy remaining inside. The Batteriser accessory is an extremely small, 0.1 mm thick stainless steel-encased circuit board designed to utilize the remaining energy of the battery.
Modern AA batteries have a capacity of 1.5 volts, but when the voltage drops to 1.35 volts, they are considered damaged, even though they still have a lot of energy remaining inside.
Professor Bob Roohparvar, a computer science professor at the University of California (USA) and founder of Batteriser, describes this like a tube of toothpaste. If you only squeeze the top, only some of the toothpaste will come out, while much of it remains at the bottom.
For example, a standard AA battery will stop working after 240 minutes of use to power a remote control, 95 minutes to power a portable speaker, or just 38 minutes for a remote-controlled toy. However, with Batteriser, it can extend the battery life to 1,185 minutes for a remote control (5 times longer), 570 minutes for a portable speaker (6 times longer), or 355 minutes for a remote-controlled toy (9 times longer).
Professor Roohparvar says that the Batteriser can help 1.5-volt batteries continue to supply power until they are discharged to 0.6 volts. He hopes that the new accessory will help reduce the use of up to 14 billion disposable batteries within a year. Currently, there are about 5.4 billion devices that use AA batteries, with 15 billion disposable batteries purchased annually worldwide . A typical American home has as many as 28 devices that operate using AA batteries.
Batteriser is being sold for less than $10 for a pack of four (meaning each Batteriser sheet costs $2.50) this fall on Amazon. It's compatible with AA, AAA, Cell-C, and Cell-D batteries. This is considered a cheaper alternative to investing in rechargeable batteries, as rechargeable batteries are often made of lithium, which is incompatible with many current battery-powered products.
Roohparvar said it is planning to forge partnerships with battery manufacturers such as Duracell and Energizer to make Batteriser more widely available in the market.
