Preserving the lifeblood of Cham cultural heritage.

At the recent scientific conference "Preserving and Promoting the Cultural Identity of the Cham Ethnic Group in the New Era," organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in coordination with the People's Committee of Khanh Hoa province, many scientists and experts expressed their concerns about the current state and future of Cham cultural heritage.

Temple complexes such as Po Klong Garai Tower, Po Rome Tower, Ponagar Tower, and Po Sah Inư Tower still vividly preserve the cultural values of the Champa civilization through centuries. However, time and harsh weather are gradually eroding the ancient bricks, reliefs, and architectural remains, causing the relics to deteriorate faster than the ability to restore and reconstruct them.

Not only tangible heritage, but also the intangible values of Cham culture face the risk of disappearing. In Bau Truc pottery village, artisans still diligently preserve their craft using traditional methods, but the number of young people involved in the profession is decreasing. Unstable income leads many families to choose other ways of making a living, bringing with it the risk of losing the secrets of the craft that have been passed down through generations. Many Cham festivals, dances, and music are being adapted to serve tourism, sometimes diluting the original spirit.

Encouragingly, many new approaches have emerged in the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage, with the perspective of not only maintaining the Cham culture in its original state but also creating conditions for its continued presence in contemporary life. Digital technology is expected to become an effective supporting tool, from digitizing documents and recreating the space of historical sites using 3D technology to building digital maps of heritage sites for easier public access. In another direction, the community-based tourism model has also shown positive results. At Bau Truc pottery village, in addition to sightseeing, visitors can directly experience pottery making, listen to stories about the craft village, and enjoy folk art. As a result, heritage is no longer a distant value but becomes a close and vibrant experience.

The biggest challenge today is how to ensure that the Cham community truly benefits from their own heritage. When culture creates livelihoods, people will have more motivation to preserve and pass on their values, helping heritage values to endure and adapt to modern life.
