On June 2nd, the City Statistics Department announced that the consumer price index (CPI) in the city in May 2025 increased by 0.73% compared to the previous month and by 2.76% compared to the same period in 2024. The average CPI for the first five months of 2025 increased by 2.82% compared to the same period in 2024.
In the 0.73% increase in the CPI in May 2025, 8 out of 11 groups of goods and services saw price increases; 2 out of 11 groups saw price decreases; and 1 out of 11 groups remained unchanged. Groups showing increases compared to the previous month include: housing, electricity, water, fuel and construction materials (up 2.55%); other goods and services (up 0.72%); food and catering services (up 0.55%); culture, entertainment and tourism (up 0.45%); household equipment and appliances (up 0.38%); beverages and tobacco (up 0.37%); clothing, footwear and headwear (up 0.32%); and medicines and medical services (up 0.15%).
Groups showing a decrease compared to the previous month include: transportation (down 0.72%); and postal and telecommunications services (up 0.08%). The education group remained unchanged. Construction material prices increased due to a shortage of sand supply, leading to a sharp rise in sand prices; in addition, increases in rental housing prices, out-of-home dining services, tourism services, and jewelry prices were the main reasons for the 0.73% increase in the CPI in May compared to the previous month.
