Coach De Zerbi announced he would pay for Tottenham's meals every week if they win. |
The Italian strategist believes that Spurs' biggest problem lies not in their technical skills, but in their mentality. He sees a familiar image that has haunted the England national team: players overwhelmed by pressure to the point of losing themselves.
According to De Zerbi, to avoid relegation, Tottenham needs to be stronger mentally, more united, and believe in themselves.
"We don't need to improve our style of play. What's important is character, unity, and belief in the club," he emphasized ahead of the home match against Brighton on April 18th. Their opponents are currently 16 points ahead of Spurs in the league table.
Instead of cramming tactics into the team in the short time remaining, De Zerbi focused on reducing pressure on his players. He even took the entire team out for dinner in London to foster camaraderie. Notably, De Zerbi announced he would pay for the team's meals every week if they won.
Despite his known personality and fiery temper, De Zerbi insists he won't change the players. However, he will adjust his communication style to help them regain their confidence. While many anticipate a shock relegation for Spurs, De Zerbi sees it as motivation. He understands that Tottenham needs more than tactics; what they need is character.
Taking over at the start of the month following Igor Tudor's departure, De Zerbi inherited a team in crisis. His debut was a 0-1 defeat against Sunderland, coupled with Cristian Romero suffering a serious injury that ruled him out for the rest of the season. Spurs are currently two points behind safety.
