Some reports suggest that Apple will announce its first foldable iPhone in the fall of 2026, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro. As a latecomer, Apple has set stringent technical requirements for its partner Samsung to thoroughly address the issue of the screen crease.

However, according to AppleInsider , Apple may be in a desperate situation as this ambition cannot be realized due to technical challenges.

Specifically, according to Digital Chat Station on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, the iPhone manufacturer is striving to create a screen that is "visually crease-free." To achieve this, Apple is reportedly experimenting with an ultra-thin flexible glass called UFG.

This technology uses materials of varying thicknesses, allowing the screen to bend flexibly while maintaining durability. However, the source indicates that there are still some "technical challenges" that Apple needs to overcome, although it did not specify what those obstacles are.

If these challenges are not resolved before September, the expected launch date of the foldable iPhone, Apple will face a difficult decision.

AppleInsider suggests that if a screen issue occurs, it could lead to two main scenarios for the first foldable iPhone. The first scenario is that Apple might postpone the release of the foldable iPhone until it has accumulated enough inventory to ensure a successful launch.

Meanwhile, a more plausible scenario is that the iPhone manufacturer will stick to its September launch schedule but with extremely limited quantities. Apple would then gradually increase supply as production stabilizes.

Previously, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the development of the foldable iPhone was behind schedule for Apple. The company will still announce the device in the second half of next year, but deliveries may be delayed due to initial productivity and production challenges.

This would lead to limited supply, at least for the first few months after launch. Combined with high demand, this could result in a shortage of foldable iPhones until at least the end of 2026.
