Napoli experienced an emotional evening at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium as they overcame Cagliari in a thrilling penalty shootout with a 9-8 victory to advance to the quarter-finals. The hero for the Naples club was goalkeeper Milinkovic-Savic, who delivered a brilliant performance both in goal and from the penalty spot.
The penalty shootout lasted 20 rounds. In the seventh round, Napoli were forced to take their penalty after their opponents had already scored. Milinkovic-Savic was unexpectedly given the responsibility, and he unleashed a decisive shot with an estimated speed of 130 km/h, leaving the Cagliari goalkeeper rooted to the spot.
This powerful shot immediately went viral on social media. One fan commented, "That was a terrifying finish, no less impressive than a striker's." Another fan remarked, "The power of the ball is no joke." Yet another wrote, "It's terrifying that the person who delivered that shot was just a goalkeeper."
However, Milinkovic-Savic's brilliance didn't stop there. In the 10th penalty kick, he made a spectacular save to deny Zito Luvumbo's shot. Shortly after, Alessandro Buongiorno converted the decisive penalty to send Napoli into the quarter-finals.
Milinkovic-Savic's composure and good judgment during the penalty shootout led the Italian press to unanimously hail him as "a hero in Naples".
Milinkovic-Savic joined Napoli last summer on a one-year loan from Torino, with an option to buy for €21 million.
