The landscape of the Premier League top 5 race.

Chelsea hold their fate in their own hands in the race for a Champions League spot, while Aston Villa moved up to fifth place after winning their early Premier League matchday 37 fixtures.

Chelsea have approximately a 60% chance of qualifying for the Champions League.

In the early hours of May 17th, Chelsea nearly dropped to sixth place, but a header in the 71st minute from Marc Cucurella helped them overcome Manchester United with a 1-0 victory. Meanwhile, Aston Villa beat Tottenham 2-0, temporarily taking fifth place.

However, Manchester City, who are sixth and one point behind Villa, still have a game in hand against Bournemouth. Chelsea understand that a win against Nottingham Forest in the final round will guarantee them a Champions League spot.

Forest, currently seventh, still have a chance to break into the top five. Aston Villa, under Unai Emery, need to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford in the final round and hope their rivals slip up.

Next season, English football will have six Champions League spots, including the top five teams in the Premier League and the winner of the Europa League (the final between Manchester United and Tottenham). The fifth spot will come from the impressive performance of English clubs in European competitions, similar to Spain.

Arsenal will host Newcastle on May 18th, a match that could decide one or two Champions League spots. A win would guarantee Arsenal qualification, while a draw would almost certainly be enough thanks to the Gunners' superior goal difference.

If Arsenal lose, they will lose their top 2 spot, and even risk dropping out of the top 5. However, their opponent in the final round is Southampton, who are currently bottom of the table. The chances of Arsenal missing out on Champions League qualification are very low.

Newcastle, if they beat Arsenal, will move up to second place, closer to a Champions League spot. Manchester City need at least one point against Bournemouth to return to the top five.

Meanwhile, Forest's chances are slim. They will face West Ham on May 18th, and a defeat would end their hopes. Forest are currently four points behind the top five.

According to Opta , Arsenal have a 99.8% chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season, followed by Newcastle (92.5%), Manchester City (87.2%), Chelsea (60%), Aston Villa (49.2%), and Nottingham Forest (11.3%).
