This is Messi's first visit to Northern California since joining Inter Miami, where the Argentine star has a large fan base. So in recent days, when he and his teammates arrive in San Jose, fans here always gather in large numbers at the hotel or training ground to welcome them.

According to the US press, most tickets to Messi's matches are more expensive than the usual MLS ticket prices. But the upcoming Inter Miami vs. San Jose Earthquakes match has seen ticket prices skyrocket in an unusual way.

"Normally, tickets to San Jose Earthquakes matches cost only $23 (nearly 600,000 VND). But tickets to the upcoming match, with the lowest priced ticket currently being sold on the online ticketing site Ticketmaster, are up to $405 (over 10.5 million VND). Individual tickets have sold out, some verified resale tickets are priced at more than $1,000 (25.9 million VND), while VIP tickets near each penalty area cost up to more than $5,000 (nearly 130 million VND)," the US newspaper, The Standard , said on May 14.

"We've had an all-star game, both with the US men's and women's national teams, the grand opening of this stadium, but the level of demand for this Messi game has surpassed all of those games and events," San Jose Earthquakes president Jared Shawlee told The Standard .

Messi just scored his 860th career goal in the match where Inter Miami lost to Minnesota United FC with a score of 1-4 on May 11.

Jared Shawlee also suggested that San Jose Earthquakes fans who can’t afford tickets can still get in if they have season tickets and buy them for half the price currently on sale. But those are only available for a few hundred seats. This event is also special, because the Messi effect only happens for one game in the entire season.

Before the match, the San Jose Earthquakes also held a concert for fans who came to see Messi but could not enter the stadium. "This is really a test run for the World Cup in 2026. We still want the city center to be a destination for anyone who cannot afford to go to the matches, but still feel the atmosphere of the festival and football," said Jared Shawlee.

Inter Miami are currently fourth in the MLS Eastern Conference standings with 21 points from 11 games. Messi's team has lost two of its last three MLS games, so they are determined to get back to winning ways. Meanwhile, San Jose Earthquakes are seventh in the Western Conference, having just won two games in a row.
