On April 4th, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism issued a decision appointing Mr. Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet as Director of the Department of Sports and Physical Education. Prior to this, Mr. Hoang Viet was the Chief of the Office of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism .
In addition, Mr. Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet previously held positions as Director of the Institute of Sports Science and Deputy Director General of the General Department of Sports (now the Department of Sports and Physical Education).
The decision to appoint the new Director of the Department of Sports and Physical Education was announced at the conference to implement the Resolution of the Standing Committee of the Ministry's Party Committee on personnel matters.
Mr. Nguyen Danh Hoang Viet's predecessor, former Director Dang Ha Viet, was transferred to become Director of the Department of Science, Technology, Training and Environment.
The most important sporting event for Vietnam in the remaining months of 2025 is the 33rd SEA Games, taking place in Thailand in November and December. Prior to that, in two consecutive SEA Games (2022 and 2023), the Vietnamese sports delegation topped the medal table.
However, at the continental and world levels, the Vietnamese delegation's performance has not been good recently. At the 19th Asian Games (Hangzhou, China) in 2023, the Vietnamese sports delegation won 3 gold medals, ranking 21st overall (2 gold medals short and dropping 5 places compared to the previous Games).
In 2024, Vietnam had no athletes win medals at the Paris Olympics. This was the second consecutive Olympic Games where Vietnamese sports came away completely empty-handed.
