The revolution from artificial intelligence

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên24/02/2024

At the Intel Foundry Direct Connect event held on February 22nd (Vietnam time) in San Jose, California, artificial intelligence (AI) was highlighted as a key driver of a revolution in the semiconductor industry.

The Age of AI

Speaking at the event, Pat Gelsinger, CEO of Intel, explained the key reason behind the company's creation of Intel Foundry – the world's first system-based chip foundry. This reason is the comprehensive dominance of AI across most sectors. AI is present in internal systems, customer service, cloud computing, electric vehicles, and more. He cited research findings forecasting a total AI market demand of $1 trillion by 2030. Thanks to AI, the digital economy currently accounts for over 15% of the global economy and is projected to reach 33% by 2030.

CEO Gelsinger stated that while the competition in semiconductor chip development previously revolved primarily around increasing core count and clock speeds, it now demands a higher, more systematic approach to meet the needs of AI development. Therefore, Intel Foundry was created to provide a comprehensive system for partners to develop semiconductor chips that meet the specialized needs of the current AI era.

Also speaking at the event, Stu Pann, Vice President of Intel Corporation and CEO of Intel Foundry, cited that running a machine learning model to develop AI currently requires hundreds of thousands of central processing units (CPUs), and in the future, millions of CPUs will be needed for each machine learning model. Therefore, if the 2000s, with the development of wireless connectivity technology, fueled the explosion of the laptop market, the AI era is driving a comprehensive boom for the semiconductor chip industry.

Speaking at Intel Foundry Direct Connect, Sam Altman, CEO and co-founder of OpenAI (the developer of ChatGPT), also emphasized that AI systems need to be continuously "taught" to become more effective.

Changes to the supply chain structure

In fact, since last year, NVIDIA has achieved impressive business results thanks to its H100 graphics processor. Initially, the H100's price tag of up to $35,000 led to concerns that the product would be difficult to sell. But the explosion of ChatGPT has made the H100 highly sought after for running applications developed using ChatGPT.

Currently, leading global technology giants like Microsoft, Meta, Google, and even Amazon are entering the AI development scene. This not only increases the demand for semiconductor chips but also leads to a structural shift in the semiconductor industry, as companies like Microsoft, Meta, and Google are now focusing on developing chips that align with the AI development needs they are pursuing.

After a period of reliance on NVIDIA chips, Microsoft is also increasing its self-reliance. Speaking online at the Intel Foundry Direct Connect event, Microsoft President and CEO Satya Nadella announced that Microsoft has selected a chip design that it plans to manufacture using the Intel 18A process in collaboration with Intel. Nadella shared: "We are in the midst of an incredibly exciting platform transition. This will drive increased productivity for every organization, as well as entire industries." The transition he referred to is the explosive growth of AI.

On a broader national level, also speaking at the event, US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo emphasized that strengthening AI competitiveness requires self-reliance in the semiconductor supply chain, which is crucial to national standing. This also opens up greater diversity and balance in semiconductor supply sources, contributing to the restructuring of the industry's supply chain.

Google temporarily suspends AI image creation application.

Yesterday, CNN reported that Google is temporarily suspending its Gemini app, an AI image creation tool, after it was criticized on social media for producing historically inaccurate images. For example, with the command "create a picture of a German soldier in 1943," Gemini produced an image of a Black person wearing a German uniform from World War II. Therefore, Google is temporarily suspending Gemini to review and correct the errors.
