The medical revolution in cardiovascular disease

(PLVN) - According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death globally. It is estimated that about 640 million people worldwide are living with cardiovascular and circulatory diseases such as high blood pressure, angina, even myocardial infarction or stroke... However, all of these health problems can be controlled thanks to a "miracle molecule" that our bodies naturally produce?

On October 12, 1998, the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institutet decided to award the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to three scientists , Robert F. Furchgott, Louis J. Ignarro and Ferid Murad, for their discoveries on the topic of “nitric oxide (NO) as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system”. This discovery opened a revolution that completely changed the perception of the global medical community, and paved the way for many clinical applications in the treatment of cardiovascular disease, erectile dysfunction, vascular damage and many other chronic diseases.

Before that, perhaps few people expected that NO - a small molecule once considered an industrial poison - could become a "miracle molecule" that saved millions of lives. Louis J. Ignarro is an American professor, doctor, and pharmacologist, famous for his groundbreaking contributions to the field of cardiovascular medicine. He and two colleagues were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1998 for discovering the role of nitric oxide (NO) as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system - a discovery that opened up new directions for treatments of heart disease and blood pressure. In the book "No More Heart Disease", Louis J. Ignarro presented the entire revolutionary research process on NO and how to exploit the power of this molecule in protecting health.

Every part of our body needs oxygen and nutrients to stay alive, says Dr. Ignarro. It is the cardiovascular system that delivers oxygen and nutrients to every part of the body smoothly and efficiently, twenty-four hours a day. The heart acts as a central pump, transporting oxygen-rich blood through a system of blood vessels that is more than 100,000 miles long—twice the circumference of the Earth.

During this process, NO helps maintain the elasticity of all blood vessels, because it is a “signal molecule” that tells blood vessels when to dilate, helping to control the amount of blood flowing to each part of the body. NO also has the effect of preventing the formation of blood clots - the cause of strokes as well as myocardial infarctions and regulating blood pressure.

Another key role of NO is to slow the buildup of plaque in the blood vessels. Not only that, NO also plays a role in many other organs and functions: enhancing memory, supporting respiration, regulating immunity, and even being involved in male physiology and brain activity.

As a signaling molecule in the nervous and circulatory systems, NO helps protect against a wide range of chronic diseases, from heart disease to cancer. Even small amounts of nitric oxide can have powerful therapeutic effects. However, most of us do not have enough NO to keep our cardiovascular system functioning properly. If you are chronically deficient in NO, you are at increased risk for a wide range of serious diseases.

In “No More Heart Disease”, Dr. Ignarro has opened a new door, where we are no longer passive in the face of this disease, which is considered a “silent killer”, but can proactively recover, prevent and live healthy by exploiting the body's own natural mechanism - producing nitric oxide (NO).

In the book “No More Heart Disease”, Ignarro does not stop at theory but also builds a specific application program called “Say Yes to NO” - a simple three-step plan that anyone can follow to help promote the natural production of NO in the body, thereby improving cardiovascular health.

The three main pillars of the program include: Nutritional supplementation (Louis J. Ignarro provides specific guidance on the use of essential supplements such as L-arginine, L-citrulline, vitamins C and E, folic acid, and alpha lipoic acid - all of which are designed to promote optimal NO production); Diet (the book provides a comprehensive list of nutrient-rich foods that help increase natural NO production, such as seafood, blueberries, foods rich in omega-3s, and good fats. At the same time, Ignarro also recommends minimizing saturated fats and trans fats to protect the body's ability to produce NO); Exercise regimen (the “Say Yes to NO” program emphasizes the importance of physical activity through practical and easy-to-apply exercises such as walking, running, swimming and dancing… with a duration of at least 20 minutes per day, 3 times per week to stimulate the body to produce NO naturally and sustainably).

It can be seen that for those who are suffering from cardiovascular damage, the book can help overcome the effects of that damage. And for those who do not have significant cardiovascular problems, the program that Ignarro provides has a clear effect in preventing cardiovascular disease, protecting health from the effects of aging, as well as other factors related to the heart.
