The medical revolution in cardiovascular disease.

(PLVN) - According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death globally. It is estimated that approximately 640 million people worldwide are living with cardiovascular and circulatory diseases such as high blood pressure, angina, and even heart attacks or strokes… However, all these health problems can be controlled thanks to a “miracle molecule” that our bodies naturally produce?

On October 12, 1998, the Nobel Committee at the Karolinska Institute decided to award the 1998 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine to three scientists : Robert F. Furchgott, Louis J. Ignarro, and Ferid Murad, in recognition of their discoveries on the topic of "nitric oxide (NO) as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system." This discovery revolutionized the understanding of the global medical community and paved the way for numerous clinical applications in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, erectile dysfunction, vascular damage, and many other chronic conditions.

Previously, few probably imagined that NO – a tiny molecule once considered a toxic substance in industry – could become a “miracle molecule” saving millions of lives. Louis J. Ignarro, an American professor, doctor, and pharmacologist, is renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to cardiovascular medicine. He and two colleagues were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1998 for discovering the role of nitric oxide (NO) as a signaling molecule in the cardiovascular system – a discovery that opened new avenues for treating heart disease and high blood pressure. In his book “No More Heart Disease,” Louis J. Ignarro presents the entire revolutionary research process on NO and how to harness its power in protecting health.

Dr. Ignarro stated that every part of our body needs oxygen and nutrients to sustain life. The cardiovascular system is responsible for delivering oxygen and nutrients to every part of the body smoothly and efficiently twenty-four hours a day. The heart acts as a central pump, transporting oxygen-rich blood through a network of blood vessels more than 160,000 km long – twice the circumference of the Earth.

During this process, NO helps maintain the elasticity of all blood vessels, as it acts as a "signaling molecule" that tells the vessels when to dilate, helping to control blood flow to each part of the body. NO also helps prevent the formation of blood clots – a cause of stroke and heart attack – and regulates blood pressure.

Another key role of NO is slowing the accumulation of atherosclerotic plaques in blood vessels. Furthermore, NO plays a role in many other organs and functions: enhancing memory, supporting respiration, regulating immunity, and even being linked to male physiology and brain activity.

As a signaling molecule in the nervous and circulatory systems, NO contributes to protecting the body from many chronic diseases, from cardiovascular disease to cancer. Even small amounts of nitric oxide can have powerful therapeutic effects. However, most of us do not have enough NO to ensure the cardiovascular system functions properly. If this NO deficiency persists, you will be at a higher risk of developing most serious illnesses.

In "No More Heart Disease," Dr. Ignarro opened a new door where we are no longer passive in the face of this disease, often considered a "silent killer," but can proactively recover, prevent, and live healthily by harnessing the body's own natural mechanism – nitric oxide (NO) production.

In his book "No More Heart Disease," Ignarro goes beyond theory and develops a practical program called "Say Yes to NO"—a simple three-step plan that anyone can follow to help boost the body's natural NO production, thereby improving cardiovascular health.

The program's three main pillars are: Nutritional Supplements (Louis J. Ignarro provides specific guidance on the use of essential supplements such as L-arginine, L-citrulline, vitamins C and E, folic acid, and alpha-lipoic acid—all aimed at promoting optimal NO production); Dietary Guidelines (the book provides a comprehensive list of nutrient-rich foods that boost natural NO production, such as seafood, blueberries, omega-3 rich foods, and healthy fats. At the same time, Ignarro recommends minimizing saturated and trans fats to protect the body's ability to produce NO); Exercise regimen (the "Say Yes to NO" program emphasizes the importance of physical activity through practical and easy-to-implement exercises such as walking, running, swimming, and dancing… with at least 20 minutes of exercise per day, 3 times per week to stimulate the body to produce NO naturally and sustainably).

It can be seen that, for those already suffering from cardiovascular damage, the book can help mitigate the effects of that damage. And for those who have not yet experienced significant cardiovascular problems, the program Ignarro provides has a clear effect in preventing cardiovascular disease, protecting health against the effects of aging, and other heart-related factors.
