The latest data from the international logistics exchange Phaata shows that in week 25 alone (up to June 21st, the most recent statistics), container freight rates from Ho Chi Minh City to key export markets such as the US and Europe simultaneously reached their highest levels in the past year, impacting the cost plans of export businesses.

Specifically, on the shipping route from Ho Chi Minh City to the US West Coast, freight rates have reached $6,013 per 40-foot container, a 26.4% increase in just one week.

Compared to last May, container freight rates for this route have increased by nearly 87%. Compared to three months ago, the increase is even higher, at 160%.

Not only exports to the US, but shipping rates from Ho Chi Minh City to Northern Europe also recorded a 22.7% increase, reaching $5,370 per container. Meanwhile, shipments to the Mediterranean experienced an 11.8% increase, pushing freight rates up to $6,479 per container. All four of these vital shipping routes have set their highest levels in the past 52 weeks.

Notably, the market is witnessing a clear divergence, with the upward price trend concentrated only on transoceanic routes.

Meanwhile, data updated by Phaata shows that container shipping rates within Asia remain relatively stable. The Shanghai route has seen almost no change, remaining around $139 per container. Even the container shipping rate from Ho Chi Minh City to Busan port in South Korea has decreased by 14.5%, falling to $320.

Regarding the reasons for the high increase in container shipping costs to the US, analysts believe that the proactive risk-averse attitude of international importers is the main factor.

Given the forecasts and changes in import tax policies in the US market, many foreign partners have repeatedly requested Vietnamese businesses to deliver goods earlier than planned, a practice known to experts as "front loading".

This shift in cargo flow created a surge in demand, causing a dramatic increase in bookings throughout June and into early July, while also increasing the risk of cargo being delayed due to overcrowding.

Furthermore, the global market is also under pressure from global maritime bottlenecks. Most shipping companies still have to maintain routes around the Cape of Good Hope (the southernmost point of Africa) due to unresolved security risks in the Red Sea (because of military conflicts in the Middle East), which prolongs shipping times and causes shortages of ships and empty containers.

Specifically for the East Coast route in the United States, shipping companies also face prolonged congestion at the Panama Canal as well as at several major transshipment ports around the world.
