Romero has decided to retire. |
Romero confirmed his retirement after his contract with Argentinos Juniors expired on March 16th. According to Argentinian media, he received many offers recently but none were suitable. The Argentinian goalkeeper wishes to continue living in Buenos Aires, a key factor in his decision to retire.
Despite ending his playing career, Romero hasn't distanced himself from football. He revealed that he's been preparing for a new chapter since his playing days and plans to pursue a coaching career. In a previous interview, Romero stated that his experiences working with top coaches like Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, along with Gerardo Martino and Alejandro Sabella with the Argentine national team, have given him many valuable lessons.
During his career, Romero had a memorable period playing for Manchester United. The Argentinian goalkeeper joined Old Trafford in 2015 and stayed with the club for six seasons. Although he spent most of his time as a backup to first-choice goalkeeper David de Gea, Romero was still considered one of the team's reliable backup options.
Romero made a particularly significant impact during Manchester United's Europa League winning campaign in the 2016/17 season under manager Mourinho. With his consistent performances, he became a silent hero in goal, playing a crucial role in helping MU win the European title.
During his six years at Old Trafford, Romero made a total of 61 appearances and kept 39 clean sheets.
