On March 14th, OpenAI officially released GPT-4, an upgraded language model compared to ChatGPT, also developed by this American startup.
ChatGPT is a chatbot that anyone can use to create stories, articles, and other types of text. The GPT-4 update also brings this capability, but with improvements in many aspects such as accuracy, security, less bias, and especially the ability to handle multiple input methods, including the ability to use image input to output text.
OpenAI's announcement highlighted GPT-4 as "the latest milestone in our efforts to scale deep learning" and that it has "demonstrated human-level performance" on a number of specialized and academic tasks. The company asserted that the new model is "more innovative and collaborative than ever before," and will "solve difficult problems with greater accuracy" than previous versions.
Open AI stated: "We spent six months refining GPT-4 to make it safer and more user-friendly. GPT-4 reduces the risk of responding to inappropriate content by up to 82%, while increasing the likelihood of providing accurate responses by up to 40%."
Tech enthusiasts are also excited about the possibility of GPT-4 responding with text to image input – a major step forward for this AI technology, although this feature has not yet been widely released. According to a project developed by OpenAI in partnership with Be My Eyes, if a user sends an image of the food inside a refrigerator, GPT-4 will not only accurately identify what's there but also provide a complete menu using those ingredients.
Most of GPT-4's features are now available to the public through ChatGPT Plus (OpenAI's paid subscription package) and on the AI-integrated version of the Bing search engine that Microsoft is testing.
Microsoft, the technology giant, has funded OpenAI's research. Microsoft's application of ChatGPT technology to its Bing search engine, Edge browser, and other products sparked a race to develop AI among major technology companies such as Google, Amazon, Baidu, and Meta.
