Rising from nothing
In 1997, Mr. Tai got married and moved out on his own. Both families were poor, so he and his wife started their lives from scratch. They encouraged each other to work twice or three times as hard so their children could have a better life in the future. He took on various odd jobs; his wife sold vegetables and fish at Van Thanh market, saving up little by little.
His opportunity arose when he participated in a revolving fund model with no interest charged, initiated by the Farmers' Association of Hon Dat commune. Gradually accumulating capital, he bought land and improved it into fertile rice paddies. After 28 years of establishing his business, from a few initial plots of land, Mr. Tai now owns 3 hectares of cultivated land. He also rents an additional 2 hectares to produce two rice crops per year. On average, his family earns nearly 400 million VND in profit from their rice fields each year.
In the bustling fields of ripening, high-quality rice, the sound of the cooperative's combine harvesters fills the air. Mr. Tai is harvesting ST24 and Dai Thom 8 rice varieties. Explaining why he planted two different varieties, Mr. Tai said: "One area has low-lying land, the other has high-lying land. We have to choose the right variety depending on the soil conditions to achieve the best yield."
Applying technology to production
Besides tending to his own farm, since April 2025, Mr. Tai has been entrusted by the local Party committee, government, and cooperative members with the role of Director of the Kenh 9 Agricultural Service Cooperative, with 25 members and a production area of over 108 hectares. With his keen insight and decisiveness, he boldly applied drone technology for sowing, fertilizing, and spraying pesticides on 100% of the cooperative's land. Mr. Tai also encouraged members to adopt sparse sowing methods, reducing seed, fertilizer, and pesticide use, saving costs and protecting the environment. As a result, the cooperative's production costs decreased by 20-30%, and profits increased significantly. "As a Party member, I must set an example. Party members shouldn't just talk, but act so that people see the results and trust them," Mr. Tai said.
In particular, Mr. Tài also encouraged 22 Khmer households to join the cooperative. Many households, who were previously accustomed to fragmented production, changed their way of thinking and doing things after joining the cooperative.
In his first year leading the cooperative, Mr. Tài earned the trust of the local government and cooperative members. The Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial Farmers' Association, Lâm Quốc Toàn, commented: “Mr. Nguyễn Văn Tài is an exemplary farmer and Party member, trusted by the people and respected by the Provincial Farmers' Association. Therefore, we have proposed to the Central Government to disburse 500 million VND from the Farmers' Support Fund so that the Kênh 9 Agricultural Service Cooperative can expand production and improve the quality of rice grains to meet export demands.”
Cooperative members receive capital support, and land preparation and sowing are carried out simultaneously, thus avoiding pests and diseases. The cooperative sells rice in large quantities, allowing traders to purchase it at prices 200-300 VND/kg higher than the market price. Mr. Tai's biggest concern is how to help his local rice reach a wider market and increase people's income. Mr. Tai said: “In the future, the cooperative's management board will strengthen connections with businesses to build a closed-loop chain from supplying seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides to selling commercial rice. With a stable market outlet, farmers will feel secure and committed to the cooperative in the long term.”
