The Ministry of Education and Training's answer is B.

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên03/07/2023

The Ministry of Education and Training has just announced the answer keys for 8 multiple-choice subjects in the 2023 high school graduation exam, including 7 foreign language subjects: English, Russian, French, Chinese, German, Japanese, and Korean.

It's worth noting that, although the English exam included controversial questions, some of which were supposedly two-choice, the Ministry of Education and Training's answer key only selected one correct answer. Specifically, the option the Ministry didn't choose (out of the two controversial options) was considered to have a more obvious error. See the full answer key here.

The question in the English exam is causing controversy.

Specifically, for question 46 of test code 402, the exam requires candidates to mark options A, B, C, and D on the answer sheet to indicate the underlined part that needs correction:

"Their emerging (A) research shows that the learning motivation of the two groups of learners was quite distinctive (B) from each other, and the compared (C) group whose learning motivation was stronger performed better than the control (D) group".

(Their pioneering research showed that the learning motivations of the two groups of learners were quite different from each other, and the experimental group, with those who had stronger learning motivation, achieved better learning outcomes than the control group.)

The underlined words include (the words in parentheses are the Vietnamese meanings understood in the context of the question): A, pioneering; B, distinctive; C, comparative; D, control.

According to the English exam answer key recently released by the Ministry of Education and Training, the correct answer to question 46, code 402, is B, meaning the word that needs correction in the quoted sentence is "distinctive". With this answer, if a student answered C (the word that needs correction is "comparative"), they would receive no points.

As Thanh Nien Newspaper has reported, in recent days, English teachers have been debating which option is the correct answer to the question above. The general consensus is that both options B and C are correct.

In particular, the display error is more easily noticeable in option C.

According to Mr. Pham Gia Bao, an English teacher specializing in IELTS preparation at 583 Bach Dang Street (Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi ), when correcting exam questions for students, he and the students initially chose answer C, "comparative" (it should have been "comparative"), because the spelling error was more obvious. However, upon closer reading, they discovered that option B, "distinctive," also had a spelling error (it should have been "distinctive").

Teacher Bao believes that one should not judge the English proficiency of the test setters based solely on a single flawed exam question. Minor errors in exam question writing are unavoidable. The issue is that the Ministry of Education and Training needs to find appropriate solutions to ensure the rights of the candidates are protected.

However, with the answer recently announced by the Ministry of Education and Training, this request was not granted by the Ministry.
