It is known that 70 years ago, on October 10, 1954, as the victorious army marched to liberate the capital, cars equipped with loudspeakers drove through the streets, announcing the government 's eight policies for the newly liberated areas, along with announcements from the City Military-Political Committee. These were the first broadcasting activities of Hanoi City.
Four days after the liberation of the capital, the first program was broadcast from a fixed broadcasting station installed at the Thuy Ta Information and Exhibition House, with the introduction, "This is the broadcast of the Hanoi Propaganda Department." October 14, 1954, was taken as the founding day of Hanoi Radio and Television Station. Since then, the voice of Hanoi has become an indispensable part of the capital.
During the war, the voice of Hanoi "ignited" the spirit of the capital's army and people. "Attention, compatriots! The American enemy is suffering a major defeat. They are plotting a frenzied attack on Hanoi. The People's Air Defense Council of Hanoi City orders that, upon hearing the air raid siren, everyone should remain calm and take shelter in bunkers…" Following the loud air raid siren and combat orders were the calm and resolute reminders from the Hanoi radio announcers, boosting the morale of the capital's army and people. This voice, broadcast through the city's loudspeaker system, became a heroic memory, reflecting the indomitable will of the capital's army and people during the 12 days and nights that led to the victory of "Dien Bien Phu in the air."
Having emerged from the war, Hanoi Radio and Television Station continues its mission as the mouthpiece of the Party Committee and the City government, and as a forum for the people of the capital. In its 70 years of development, closely linked to the historical periods and development of the capital and the country, Hanoi Radio and Television Station has always affirmed its important position among the city's media agencies. The station has successfully fulfilled its political nhiệm vụ, reflecting and disseminating the policies and guidelines of the Party, State, Government, and the city, and updating news on various media platforms. Hanoi Radio also provides timely information in many areas of life. Its cultural and entertainment content, imbued with Hanoi's unique identity, contributes to enriching the cultural and spiritual life of the people of the capital.
In particular, Hanoi Radio and Television Station has successfully organized many live television programs and teleconferences, reflecting important political, cultural, and social events. Most recently, the "Cultural Festival for Peace" celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of Hanoi (October 10, 1954 – October 10, 2024) and the 25th anniversary of Hanoi being honored by UNESCO as a "City for Peace" (July 16, 1999 – July 16, 2024), which took place on October 6, 2024, was broadcast live on various media platforms in a meticulous, professional, and lively manner. This activity of the Station has been praised by the City leaders and commended by the people of Hanoi.
Mr. Nguyen Kim Khiem, General Director and Editor-in-Chief of Hanoi Radio and Television Station, stated: “Faced with the rapidly changing trends in domestic and international media, Hanoi Radio and Television Station is implementing a strategy to develop into a strong media complex, connecting the station with the public in a modern digital content supply chain, contributing to the gradual formation of Hanoi's content ecosystem, while still affirming the unique identity of the Capital's Radio and Television Station.”
Accordingly, along with television modernization, Hanoi Radio and Television Station has modernized two radio channels, linking the content and format of each channel with the distinctive characteristics of the capital city and the lives of Hanoians. Specifically, FM90 is positioned as a specialized channel for "Hanoi News and Traffic," while FM96 is identified as the capital's "News and Music" channel.
Hanoi Radio also launched the HanoiOn multimedia content application in July 2024. This is a content distribution platform within the digital journalism ecosystem, part of Hanoi's strategy to complete a modern multimedia communication complex.
Also in 2024, Hanoi Radio and Television Station restarted television production with the long-running series "For the Love of Hanoi," which aired on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the capital city.
With the attention of the Central Government and the City, the decisive innovation of the leadership team, and the collective efforts of the staff, Hanoi Radio has made remarkable breakthroughs. Hanoi Radio's news is faster and more diverse; many programs have been revamped, creating new vitality; and digital platforms have developed strongly.
In 2023, Hanoi Television quickly regained its position as one of the top 10 most-watched television channels in the Hanoi area. In particular, Hanoi Television has made significant strides in digital transformation.
