The mark of the Vietnamese flag

VHO - Not long after chess player Lai Ly Huynh won the world chess championship, breaking China's 35-year dominance, Vietnamese chess continued to make its mark on the international stage when chess player Le Phan Hoang Quan excellently brought home a silver medal for the country at the 2025 World Youth Chess Championship for the U8, U10, and U12 age groups in Kazakhstan.

Both chess players Lai Ly Huynh and Le Phan Hoang Quan are from Ho Chi Minh City. These titles not only bring glory to Vietnamese chess but also contribute to achieving accomplishments to celebrate the First Congress of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, term 2025-2030.

At the 2025 World Youth Chess Championship, Hoang Quan was the only player among the six Vietnamese representatives to win a medal. To achieve this, Hoang Quan went through 11 tense games against many strong players of the same age group in the U10 boys' category.

Particularly in the final round, Hoang Quan, playing with the black pieces (second), still brilliantly defeated Ivanovic Leonid (Serbia). After 11 rounds, the young player from Ho Chi Minh City won 8 games, drew 2, and lost 1, achieving 9 points, the same score as Yuan Shunzhe (China), but ranked second due to an inferior tie-breaking score.

Throughout the competition, the young chess player from Ho Chi Minh City consistently maintained a stable performance, playing tenaciously and always demonstrating a high level of determination. In particular, victories in crucial games helped Hoang Quan achieve his best personal best ever.

Vietnamese chess has seen quite a few young players win world championships, including Dao Thien Hai (U16 in 1993), Nguyen Thi Dung (U12 in 1994), Hoang Thanh Trang (U20 in 1998), Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (U10 in 2000), Le Quang Liem (U14 in 2005), Tran Minh Thang (U8 in 2008), Nguyen Anh Khoi (U10 in 2012, U12 in 2014), Nguyen Le Cam Hien (U8 in 2015), and Dau Khuong Duy (U12 in 2023). Although he couldn't win the highest medal like his predecessors, Hoang Quan's achievement is also very impressive, showing the great effort and potential of the player born in 2015.

Before winning the World Youth Championship silver medal, Hoang Quan had already won the Asian Youth Championship gold medal in 2023, the Southeast Asian Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship gold medals in 2023, and the National Youth Championship gold medal in 2025. Besides his passion for chess, Hoang Quan also plays Chinese chess well and even won a gold medal in this sport when he was 9 years old.

Besides his achievements in competitions, Hoang Quan places great emphasis on his studies, always striving to be an excellent student. Hoang Quan loves mathematics and English and has achieved many successes in district and city-level mathematics competitions. Hoang Quan was also honored to be one of the 18 "Children of the Year" selected by Vietnam Children's Magazine in 2023.

Winning the silver medal at the World Youth Chess Championships is a significant milestone for Hoang Quan, affirming his talent and long-term potential for future development. This achievement also contributes to raising the profile of Vietnamese chess on the world map. From winning championships at the national, regional, and continental levels to now being the world runner-up, Hoang Quan is demonstrating great ability and progress. The achievements of this 10-year-old chess player are not due to luck but are the result of serious and persistent training under the guidance of his coaches.

Furthermore, the support and encouragement from family and school also played a crucial role, giving me the motivation to pursue my passion for this intellectual sport . This achievement is not only a source of pride for me personally, but also a precious gift for Vietnamese chess, affirming that the younger generation is ready to follow in the footsteps of their predecessors and bring Vietnamese intelligence to the world stage.

Hoang Quan's silver medal at the World Youth Chess Championships is a great source of encouragement, instilling confidence in young chess players who are nurturing their dreams. It shows that, with the right investment, persistent training, and burning passion, young Vietnamese chess players can absolutely step onto the international stage and achieve glory.

From Le Phan Hoang Quan to Lai Ly Huynh, from chess to Chinese chess, these two resounding achievements have affirmed the brand of Vietnamese chess on the international stage. While Chinese chess continues to build on its traditional strengths to win prestigious titles, chess – a globally popular intellectual sport – demonstrates the remarkable resilience of Vietnamese youth.

This parallel development creates a comprehensive picture of the growth of intellectual sports in Vietnam. It can be said that consecutive successes on the world stage are a driving force for Vietnamese chess players and chess in general to continue investing in and improving training quality, and expanding opportunities for international competition. The gold medal in the world Xiangqi (Chinese chess) and the silver medal in the world youth chess are not only a source of pride for the players themselves, but also vivid evidence of the aspiration to rise and conquer new heights for Vietnamese intellectual sports.
