Is it the end for Onana at MU?

Andre Onana was once expected to be a key piece in shaping Manchester United's modern style of play, but he gradually became surplus to requirements in the eyes of the coaching staff.

On the evening of April 13th, the Cameroonian goalkeeper was left out of the squad as MU lost 1-4 to Newcastle in the 32nd round of the Premier League, thus ending his streak of consecutive Premier League starts since arriving at Old Trafford. Altay Bayindir was given the opportunity to make his league debut. Conversely, Onana's time at Old Trafford may be running out.

The Athletic claims that Onana's return to the starting lineup is uncertain when Manchester United host Lyon in the second leg of the Europa League quarter-final on April 18th. The source even questioned the goalkeeper's long-term future: "Onana may have to find a new club."

Onana was once expected to replace David de Gea, but he is becoming a burden in goal. A series of mistakes, especially in last season's Champions League and the recent defeat against Lyon, have quickly eroded confidence in him. Selling Onana wasn't part of the original plan, but Manchester United are now forced to consider it.

Onana's footwork is considered his strong point, but his inconsistent form and a series of mistakes have caused the goalkeeper to gradually lose his place at Old Trafford. "Onana could leave MU after just two seasons," The Athletic concluded.

Manchester United faces a difficult dilemma: keep a declining goalkeeper or sell him and accept a loss. With the Premier League's Financial Fair Play regulations becoming increasingly strict, finding a buyer willing to pay for Onana is no easy task.

If Onana doesn't manage to turn things around in time, he will simply fade into the list of other failed signings for MU in the post-Sir Alex era.

Two silly mistakes by Onana led to MU being held to a draw. In the early hours of April 11th, MU drew 2-2 with Lyon away from home in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals.
