Atletico Madrid officially entered a new phase after investment fund Apollo Sports Capital completed the acquisition of a majority stake in the club.
However, the news that captured the most attention from fans wasn't from the boardroom meeting, but the return of legend David Villa.
The 42-year-old former striker has been appointed as an advisor to the board of directors in the new structure of the Madrid club. Villa remains the greatest goalscorer in the history of the Spanish national team and left a lasting mark while playing for Atletico.
In the 2013/14 season, under coach Diego Simeone, Villa was a crucial player in helping Atletico win the La Liga title and reach the UEFA Champions League final. Therefore, his return is seen as a bridge between the new owners and the team's traditions.
Sharing on the club's official website, Villa expressed his pride in returning to the place that helped him become an icon. The former Barcelona and New York City FC striker affirmed his desire to continue contributing to Atletico's development in his new role.
"The club has developed significantly over the years. I hope I can help Atletico continue to achieve even more success," Villa said.
Despite the change in ownership, Atletico has maintained stability in its management structure. Enrique Cerezo continues as president, while Miguel Angel Gil remains CEO.
The management believes that the combination of new investment and figures deeply rooted in the club's history, such as Villa, will help Atletico enter the next phase of development, both on and off the pitch.
