For Bui My Lien and her husband in Thanh Quoi commune, Tet (Lunar New Year) doesn't begin with shopping and decorating the house, but with planning, working hard, and diligently managing their finances. These days, they are busy finalizing orders for homemade cakes for customers. Mr. Tran Van Hung, Lien's husband, carefully checks the delivery list, noting down each specific address.
Two years ago, when the company downsized, Mr. Hung lost his job, and the financial burden fell entirely on Ms. Lien's shoulders. "The whole family lived off the small convenience store. At that time, I was very worried, especially during the Lunar New Year season. Just thinking about the children's school fees, electricity and water bills, and the money for preparations for Tet... it was overwhelming," Ms. Lien recounted.
Not wanting his wife to manage everything alone, Mr. Hung discussed with her the idea of starting a baking business, with him taking on the delivery job. Since then, for the past two years, every time Tet (Lunar New Year) approaches, their small house is bustling with the atmosphere of "baking." Ms. Lien mixes the batter, bakes sponge cakes and waffles, and makes peanut candy; Mr. Hung packages, takes orders, and delivers. Their two young children reduce their screen time and gaming time to help their parents label and pack the cakes into boxes. Ms. Lien confided: "Thanks to sharing the work, although the income isn't much, it's enough for the family to have a decent Tet. Importantly, neither my wife nor I feel overwhelmed by the workload. Therefore, the family celebrates Tet more happily."
Spring is knocking at the door. But what makes Tet (Vietnamese New Year) so special isn't just the lavish feasts and spotless homes, but the moments when the whole family shares love. Because Tet is only truly joyful when each member contributes, so that love isn't just words, but is present in every simple, warm action; everyone feels a part, a responsibility, and a joy when Tet and spring arrive.
