"Ao Dai 100" is an idea to bring the Vietnamese ao dai to 100 famous locations around the world to promote the beauty of the Vietnamese ao dai. This idea was started by Hoang Thanh Tung, 41 years old, and his wife in May 2018.
Tung said that six years ago, social media was abuzz with controversy surrounding the ao dai (Vietnamese traditional dress) at some fashion shows abroad. At that time, he thought that instead of arguing, he and his wife could introduce the world to the beauty of the Vietnamese ao dai through photography. As of February 2020, they had visited 12 countries and taken 28 photo sets at various locations. The project was then temporarily suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic and resumed in 2023.
The photo shows a woman in a traditional Vietnamese dress atop Nangkartshang mountain with a view of Ama Dablam peak in the Himalayas, Nepal. "I like this photo the most because it was very difficult to take, involving many consecutive days of trekking at altitudes above 5,000 meters, with oxygen deprivation," he said.
The 18-day journey to Nepal to conquer Everest Base Camp (at an altitude of 5,390 m) and Gokyo Peak at an altitude of 5,483 m was the most memorable trip of 2023 for his family. For amateur climbers, the trip to the base camp is a major challenge.
