Going to the market… for antiques and vintage items.

Upon entering the "market," outsiders like us immediately wondered: How can we distinguish professional collectors and avoid being misled by counterfeit items? Mr. Han, the owner of Thoi Co Cafe and also a collector of antiques, confidently stated: "Only professionals are welcome here; everyone knows each other, including the dealers. If any middlemen or strangers try to swap items, we'll know right away."

The "market" for antiques and vintage items is held every Saturday.

The "market" is located at the end of a small road, at the foot of Nguyen Trung Truc Bridge (Swing Bridge), in Long Xuyen ward. Regularly on Wednesdays and Saturdays, members gather here for a "market meeting," a practice that has continued for over two years and has become a vibrant gathering place for antique and vintage collectors from all over.

Early in the morning, about 100 people had already gathered here, with stalls displaying all kinds of antiques on both sides of the street, in a variety of styles, colors, and origins, creating an impressive scene. Mr. Han said that due to bad weather, this number was still modest; normally, the number of visitors coming to sightsee, socialize, and exchange information would be three times higher.

A wide variety of antique items were brought in for display, exchange, and trade.

Besides members from An Giang province, the "market" also welcomes collectors of antiques and vintage items from provinces throughout the Mekong Delta, Ho Chi Minh City, and even some more distant provinces in the North.

From the previous afternoon, a large number of collectors had gathered in Long Xuyen ward to prepare their memorabilia. Around 4 a.m., they began displaying their wares and engaging in exchanges and interactions. They shared a common passion for artifacts showcasing traditional beauty through fine art, primarily ceramics and bronze objects.

No expertise is required; anyone can go to the "market" to find and buy quality antique items.

“Here, we mainly bring mid-range value memorabilia. The main thing is that collectors meet each other to get to know each other after interacting on social media and spotting higher-value items. Many people have been involved in this field for decades. Putting economics aside, the passion for antiques is immense because of their enduring cultural significance and value. Some are even willing to donate precious artifacts they have painstakingly searched for to the provincial museum,” shared Nguyen Hoang Mai, a veteran member of the Thoai Son antiques group.

Mr. Nguyen Vinh Long came from Ho Chi Minh City to the "market" to look for unique and unusual items.

Enjoying his retirement, Mr. Nguyen Vinh Long, from Ho Chi Minh City, chooses to relax by wandering through the antique and vintage markets that take place alternately in various provinces and cities. Mr. Long says he particularly likes the market in Long Xuyen ward ( An Giang province), because each trip always yields some special and unique items at good prices.

Besides the economic aspect, antique and vintage collectors come here as a place to enhance their understanding of culture.

For collectors of antiques and vintage items in general, markets like these are not only a place for economic exchange, but also a healthy playground for relaxation, providing opportunities to better understand artifacts and expand one's cultural knowledge in this field.
