The Tam Lung Agricultural Service Cooperative in Dong Dang commune was established in May 2021 with 9 members, primarily engaged in agricultural production.
According to our research, sugarcane is a traditional crop in Dong Dang commune, grown mainly in the villages of Tam Lung, Khuoi Muoi, Nhat Tam, etc. Here, people grow white sugarcane because this variety is more resistant to pests and diseases than other types of sugarcane.
Ms. Phung Dinh Ha, Director of Tam Lung Agricultural Service Cooperative, said: Immediately after its establishment, the cooperative received guidance and support from the commune government and specialized departments in applying scientific and technical methods to develop sugarcane cultivation and care according to VietGAP standards on an area of 5 hectares. Cooperative members and sugarcane farmers in the area participated in training on the process and techniques of sugarcane care according to VietGAP standards; and received support of over 2 tons of organic fertilizer. In addition, the cooperative regularly organizes meetings for members to exchange and share experiences in caring for and controlling pests and diseases in sugarcane... Currently, cooperative members, in coordination with local people, maintain sugarcane cultivation and care according to VietGAP standards on an area of 10 hectares.
Mr. Lang Van Hoa, a member of the cooperative, said: "My family has been growing sugarcane for many years. Each year, we maintain a sugarcane plantation of 2 to 3 sao (approximately 0.2 hectares). Previously, we planted and cared for the sugarcane using traditional methods, resulting in stunted, tough plants infested with pests. Now, thanks to the application of scientific and technical methods, the sugarcane is softer and sweeter. Currently, it's harvest season, and we've already sold about one-third of the crop at 20,000 VND per stalk. From sugarcane farming, my family earns over 50 million VND per year, bringing in five times the economic value compared to growing rice as before."
Along with focusing on quality, the cooperative also pays attention to building and promoting its products. As a result, in recent years, Tam Lung sugarcane has become a well-known product to many customers inside and outside the province.
Ms. Vu Thu Thao from Quang Ninh province said: "Every time I go back to my hometown, especially around the Lunar New Year, my family buys sugarcane from Dong Dang commune to enjoy and give as gifts. The sugarcane grown here is sweet and soft, and especially in the last few years, the locals have been peeling it, cutting it into small pieces, and packaging it in bags for sale, which I find very convenient and clean."
It is known that, on average, farmers can plant about 400 sugarcane stalks per sao (approximately 1000 square meters). Sugarcane grown according to VietGAP standards is soft, sweet, less susceptible to pests and diseases, and its value has increased by 10 to 15% compared to previous years. According to calculations, farmers earn 40 million VND per sao from sugarcane cultivation.
Besides focusing on developing sugarcane cultivation according to VietGAP standards, the cooperative also produces and processes chili bamboo shoots, a product that has been certified with a 3-star OCOP rating. In the future, the cooperative will encourage its members and the local people to continue applying VietGAP-compliant techniques to sugarcane cultivation; proactively research and diversify products such as bottled sugarcane juice and vacuum-packed peeled sugarcane to increase their value.
