Dream roads
At the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year, Ban Thi Nhung (born in 2014), a Dao ethnic girl from Thanh Chung village, Tay Yen Tu commune, rode her bicycle to school on her own, no longer needing her parents to take her. This is because the more than 2-kilometer road from her house to the turnoff to the Tay Yen Tu spiritual and ecological tourism area has been paved with concrete. Sections of the road crossing streams, which were once treacherous, have now been replaced with sturdy culverts and warning signs for deep water. "Since the new concrete road was built, I'm no longer afraid of being late for school or having to miss school, even when it rains," Ban Thi Nhung shared.

Listening to his grandson's story with the visitors, Mr. Ban Sinh Trinh said that the area where he lives only has 7 households but encompasses hundreds of hectares of economic forest belonging to nearly 30 other households, along with many natural forests. Although very close to Provincial Road 293, the villagers previously had to use footpaths. Whenever it rained, the streams would rise, making it impossible for the households to go to work. When harvesting timber from the planted forests, the cost of hiring laborers for transportation was very expensive. To have a new concrete road to the furthest part of the village, his family and other forest-owning households donated more than 10,000 square meters of land for the road construction; his family alone donated over 600 square meters of garden and residential land.
| During the period 2021-2025, communes in the former Son Dong district received investment for the construction of more than 30 transportation projects, with a total budget of approximately 1.2 trillion VND. Currently, the Son Dong Investment and Construction Project Management Board and the People's Committees of the communes in the area are actively investing in the construction of 5 transportation projects with a total investment of approximately 440 billion VND. |
It is known that the newly constructed road in Thanh Chung village is part of the "Project for planning and stabilizing the settlement of residents in place in San, Dan, and Dan 3 villages, Huu San commune; Mau and Thanh Chung residential areas, Tay Yen Tu town; Dong Rieu, Dong Ma, and Ban villages, Duong Huu commune; Lo village, Le Vien commune; and Goc Sau village, Giao Liem commune, Son Dong district" (formerly). The project is included in the National Target Program for socio-economic development of ethnic minority and mountainous areas in Son Dong district (formerly) in 2025. The total length of the roads under the project is over 5.6 km, with a width of 3.5 m or more, including 5 culverts and 2 box culverts. The total investment is over 32 billion VND from the State budget. The road leading to Thanh Chung village alone is 3.2 km long and has 2 culverts.
Mr. Nguyen The Kien, representative of the construction unit (Dong Do Construction Investment Group), said that the project started at the end of October 2024. Thanks to the attention of the local authorities, the support of the people in donating land, and the concentration of manpower and resources for construction, the unit has completed the Ba Bep route and routes 1, 2, and 3 in Thanh Chung village (Tay Yen Tu commune). The entire project is expected to be completed in November this year, one month ahead of schedule, creating favorable conditions for hundreds of ethnic minority households and contributing to the development of forest economy and tourism in the locality.
Creating opportunities for breakthroughs and advancements.
Along with the aforementioned project, during the 2021-2025 period, communes in the former Son Dong district received investment for the construction of more than 30 transportation projects with a total budget of approximately 1.2 trillion VND. Notable projects include: the bridge from Trai Chua hamlet to Khe Tau, Yen Dinh commune (commenced in November 2023, completed in August 2024); the renovation and upgrading of the Vinh An - Van Son road (commenced in September 2023, completed in June 2025); and the renovation and upgrading of the road from Chung Son hamlet, Le Vien commune (now An Lac) to Dinh hamlet, Son Dong commune (commenced in December 2023, completed in June 2025). The total investment for these three projects is over 180.6 billion VND. Upon completion, these projects will contribute to overcoming isolation, promoting trade, and developing the local economy and society.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phong, Chairman of the People's Committee of Yen Dinh commune, acknowledged that since the completion of the Trai Chua bridge, more than 300 households in Khe Tau and Dong Ha villages are no longer isolated and do not need assistance whenever floods occur. People no longer fear being swept away by floods when crossing the Khe Tau ford, and can confidently expand production and develop the forest-garden economy.
Despite support from the province and central government for the renovation, upgrading, and development of the transportation network, eight highland communes in the former Son Dong district still need new roads and the renovation and upgrading of many existing ones. Currently, the Son Dong Investment and Construction Project Management Board (under the Bac Ninh Provincial No. 1 Investment and Construction Project Management Board for Transportation and Agriculture ) and the People's Committees of the communes are actively implementing investment projects such as: the road from An Lac commune to Phien Huong and Van Son communes; the bypass road around Duong Huu commune; the ring road around Tay Yen Tu commune from Thac Vot bridge to Son Dong No. 3 High School; the renovation and upgrading of the road from Cau Cuoi, Son Dong commune to Chung Son village, An Lac commune; and the upgrading and expansion of Khe Tau and Dong Ha roads connecting with Deo Gia commune… The total investment for these projects is approximately 440 billion VND.
According to Mr. Hoang Van Liem, Director of the Son Dong Investment and Construction Project Management Board, upon completion, these transportation routes will contribute to regional connectivity, eliminating isolated areas (during rain and floods), and expanding the external transportation network. This aims to complete the transportation planning of the highland communes and the province, creating a comprehensive transportation network to meet the increasing transportation needs in the region, contributing to the socio-economic development of the communes in particular and Bac Ninh province in general. The projects will facilitate travel and daily life, ensure traffic safety for the people; and develop infrastructure, creating conditions to promote socio-economic development, ensure national defense and security; contributing to the industrialization and modernization of agriculture and rural areas.
